The design of a smartwatch depends on the brand, as each has its own unique look. The basic design of a smartwatch is a lightweight aluminum body, a LED display, sensors placed on the back and a wide range of straps. The straps vary in sizes ranging from 20mm to 46mm and are often interchangeable and come in a range of materials such as metals, silicon, leather, or fabric.

 

The body is often made with aluminum or polycarbonate blended plastic or premium options such as stainless steel, ceramic, or titanium; this does come at a higher price. With a wide range of sensors within the body such as; a proximity sensor, accelerometer, heart rate monitor, gravity sensor, altitudes sensor, ambient light sensor, barometer, pedometer, thermometer, fingerprint scanner, microphone, speakers and a few others.

 

The display can come in a wide range of sizes from the smallest being 1.2” (on the Galaxy Active 2) to the largest being 1.78” (on the Apple Watch 5). With touchscreen or non-touchscreen options, the screen itself is either OLED, AMOLED, Super AMOLED, LCD or a combination of both OLED and LCD (found on the Tic watch Pro).

 

The touch screen does have its downside as it limits functionality due to the small screen, so the addition of gesture control, rotating digital bezel or hardware buttons is somewhat of a must for a smartwatch as this allows you to move around the UI.

 

The IP rating varies from watch to watch, here are some of the most common IP ratings: Water-resistant to 50m (Fitbit Ionic & Versa 2, Apple Watch 4, Samsung Galaxy Watch & Active 2, Apple Watch 5 and Huawei Band), IP67 (Tic Watch E2), IP68 (Tic Watch Pro and Fossil Sport), IPX7 (Apple Watch 3) there are lots of other variants out there. Still, these are the most common on the market to date. Keep an eye out on what glass is fitted as some have Gorilla Glass, where some don’t, and some brands use plastic instead.

Tizen OS is an open-source OS developed by Intel, Samsung, Vodaphone and Orange. Due to this collaboration, apps are integrated giving you versatility, and a unique wearable experience. With an extensive range of custom abilities, battery life improvements, and is compatible with iOS and Android devices makes this one of the leading brands on the market.

 

iOS or watch OS comes with the beloved Siri and app store. Sadly, it only works with iPhones and Apple products. This operating system comes with customizable watch faces and syncs with your iPhone. The beautiful thing about Apple is the privacy protection of your data.

 

Google’s Wear OS, previously known as Android Wear. Some well-known brands, such as Fossil and LG, use this OS. Some key features like Google Assistant, track health, app downloads and custom settings are as easy as syncing to your smartphone.

 

Fitbit OS connects with any device (iOS/Android/Windows), accept calls, make payments, run apps, and has Alexa. This OS also optimizes your battery usage giving over 6 days of use.

 

Xiaomi doesn't have a full OS; they mostly use android with their UI (User Interface) overlay.

 

Huawei Wear Syncs is the basic Android OS with a UI overlay.

 

Garmin watch OS focuses on the fitness side of wearables. They were developed for smartwatches to provide features like answering calls, music, Garmin Coach, Group Track, other sport-related features and many more.

 

Battery Life & Charging:

Battery duration on smartwatches varies based on battery size, display size, software and usage. With the standard watch lasting 1-2 days, but some can go up to 5 days, then there are the minimalistic watches that can last 30 days but bear in mind these watches don’t have colour screens. The charge time is often long, mostly in the 2h range.

Charging methods vary based on the brand, but some of the most common are magnetic connecting pins, wireless charging, proprietary chargers and charging docks.

 

Storage:

Onboard storage ranges from: 2.5GB, 4GB (most common), 8GB, 16GB, 32GB. The larger storage options mostly belong to Apple watches.

 

Connectivity:

The choice of connectivity options is basic as the device just connects to your smartwatch to download data and sync to your phone. Here is a shortlist of options available:
