Zoom H4n Review

The Zoom H4N is the latest handheld portable digital recorder from Zoom. It is a great improvement on previous Zoom models with greater ease of use with it's easy menu options. It gives superior world class and clear, rich recordings that comes with it's 4 track recording system. It has a solid, compact build and is much easier to use than the previous Zoom models. At 2.6" x 6.1" x 1.9", it can easily fit in a large coat pocket, backpack or briefcase. Its microphone housing is metal. The front plate appears to be plastic. The rest of the body has a rubberized coating. Three tiny rubber feet are on the back. The backlit LCD screen is bright, clear and easy to read. Its viewable area is more than 2.5 times larger than the screen on the H2 or the H4.The buttons are crisp, responsive and clearly laid out. Ease of use is paramount with a device like this and the H4n is definitely easy to use. Just power the unit on, make a few adjustments to the recording level and you are ready to record. If you want to change the format that you are using to record this can be done simply by accessing the menu and since this is probably one of the most common features it is located front and center on the menu. The rest of the controls are easy to understand however it can be a little bit time consuming since there are so many features to figure out. There is a tuner for all your stringed instruments, true 4 track recording, XLR/Quarter Inch jacks, Mini Stereo Jack, Speaker for playback, headphone output, digital guitar effects, big bright screen, rubberized coating, and it includes a mic stand adapter, case and windscreen. Also, this portable recorder will mount to a tripod with no extra accessories necessary. You can plug the Zoom H4n into a computer via a USB cable and use it as an audio interface. You can also use the built in mics. It's sort of like having an external sound card that doubles as a microphone and headphone jack. The H4n can write files up to 2GB and accept SD media cards up to 32GB in size. It records mp3 files from 48-320 kbps and wav files up to 24-bit/96kHz. The USB 2.0 connection is very fast. The Zoom H4n has 2 combo XLR/Hi-Z inputs with phantom power, an 1/8" EXT MIC jack with plug-in power, a mini USB 2.0 port, and 1/8" REMOTE and stereo Headphone/LINE OUT jacks. Zoom estimates that if you record in stereo at 16-bit/44.1kHz, you will get 6 hours of recording time in normal mode and 11 hours of recording time in stamina mode. The Zoom H4n sounds good. The mic preamps are fairly clean. however, there is much more noise and hum when using the included AC adapter. With AA batteries, much better. Like all portable recorders with built in mics, there is the problem of handling noise. If you're recording and moving your hands about on the recorder, you're going to hear the handling noise. The rubber grip on the sides of the unit makes it easier to grip. You can, however, reduce the handling noise problem by attaching a tripod into the slot at the back of the unit. This makes recordings much smoother and more crisp. The capabilities of the Zoom H4n are astounding. Well thought out, superior sound quality and the all round features confirm this as a highly recommended top of the range Zoom digital recorder.
