TomTom GO LIVE 2050 Review

  • 4.0 / 5
    • The good:
Magnetised Cradle, Easy To Use, Big Clear Screen
    • The bad:
Short Battery Life, Only 1 Year Free Live Service
The TomTom GO LIVE 2050 is a 5.0" in-car GPS unit that keeps you in touch with the fast lane through faster, more interactive navigation. It has an ultra intuitive design with a responsive, rich colour Fluid Touch screen and magnetic mount. A year of LIVE Services is included free, giving you the best mobile speed cameras and traffic information. Added also are Richer maps with IQ Routes. Weighing 260g, the unit measures 143mm wide, 88mm tall, and 19mm thick. Its touch screen measures five inches. Unlike most other TomTom devices, the TomTom GO LIVE 2050 doesn't have a windshield suction cup that's built into the body of the device. Rather, the cup is part of the in-car charging cradle and features a set of magnets that not only hold the Go Live 2050 firmly in place, but also allows the unit to be snapped in and out. As a piece of design, it's pretty nifty and should please those who prefer to tap in a destination while having the device in their lap. The 5-inch display on the TomTom Go 2050 is bright, sharp and simply a joy to use, there was no question of a washed out screen even on bright afternoons. The 5-inch fluid screen is a nice upgrade from previous models and the ability to zoom in and out of maps quickly and with no major hiccups also proved very useful. The unit also comes with voice controls, with a wide range of pre-programmed actions. The feature works rather well, couple this feature with the hands-free capability and you’ve got a safer-than-most GPS device. In general, you can trust the information the device is giving you, it updates every two minutes, after all. But don’t think it means you can ignore road signs. There were a couple of discrepancies regarding maximum speed limits in certain areas so, even if you set your device to warn you that you’re going over the speed limit, bear in mind it might not know exactly what the speed limit is supposed to be. The live traffic updates proved accurate and, while driving home in rush hour, very helpful. Perhaps the next thing for TomTom to focus on should be battery life. The battery took a full five hours to charge and slightly less to run flat again. You really don’t want to forget that power cable at home if you’re out on more than a work commute. Overall, the unit does exactly what it is supposed to do. It’ll be a useful companion to have on a drive. If you don’t currently own an in-car GPS, this is the device for you. It is also definitely worth buying for the HD Traffic service.
