Sony Xperia XZ Premium Review

The 3-Minute Sony Xperia XZ Premium Review

Breathtaking screen, uninspired design

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 3.5/5

The Best:

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium boasts an impressive display, powerful camera, and killer performance, making it worth considering in the crowded high-end smartphone market.

The Bugs:

Despite the many positive aspects of the phone, it’s not without its drawbacks. Mediocre battery life, current lack of 4k content, and a design that fails to innovate detract from an otherwise great smartphone.

Is it for you?

If a quality display is of the utmost importance, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium may be right for you. A stunning 4K screen paired with a snappy, responsive operating system combine to create an excellent experience.

“With impressive performance, a top-notch camera, and a heavily customizable and responsive operating system, there’s a lot going for this phone.”

Meet the Sony Xperia XZ Premium

While Sony has failed to capture a large portion of the Western smartphone market, its Xperia phones have been generally met with positive reception. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium marks the company’s latest attempt to insert itself at the forefront of the luxury smartphone scene. It should come as no surprise that this phone comes packed with some seriously impressive specs.

The main attraction of the XZ Premium is its breathtaking 4K display. Beautiful, crisp image quality make the XZ Premium’s screen one of the best available today. An excellent camera, lightweight software, and great performance make for an enjoyable and responsive smartphone experience.

What we like

The main draw of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is its 4K display. The phone features a 5.5-inch screen with some of the sharpest image quality we’ve ever seen on a mobile device. The display is also made of Gorilla Glass, an excellent perk that gives it some great durability. Power users will be thrilled to hear about the available customization that gives you access to adjustable colour gamut and tuneable white balance settings.

The excellent display is backed up by some impressive performance. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium features powerful hardware and super lightweight software that allows for snappy performance in even the most demanding situations. Another welcome addition is the 19-megapixel camera that is capable of recording 4K video at a whopping 960 frames per second. The specs of this camera blow the majority of other phone’s cameras out of the water.

What we don’t like

While there’s a lot of good things to say about the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, the phone is not without its drawbacks. The design, while beautiful, is rather uninspired - we’ve seen it before, multiple times. The glass construction picks up fingerprints easily too. Given its size, you’ll be making a lot of them.

Another major issue with the phone is its rather unimpressive battery life. In 2017, there are a lot of phones that will last more than a day on a single charge, but the XZ Premium will generally only get you through a workday. This may be an acceptable tradeoff considering how powerful the display is, but it’s still a negative that hampers the overall experience.

The 4K display is beautiful, but there’s still a distinct lack of 4K content to actually view right now. What use is a 4K screen when you don’t have anything that's available in 4K? Don't worry though, it's on its way. You may just have to wait a little while.

Should you buy it?

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium has one of the best displays on the market and is worth a look. With impressive performance, a top-notch camera, and a heavily customizable and responsive operating system, there’s a lot going for this phone. If you can handle the less-than-impressive battery life and are a heavy video watcher, this phone may be right up your alley. Those looking for a high-end Android phone that’s dressed to impress will not be disappointed with what the Sony Xperia XZ Premium has to offer.
