Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V Review
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 IV set the bar pretty high when it came to premium compact cameras. With the new RX100 V, Sony has brought out yet another premium compact camera that boasts of some features that are simply jaw-dropping. It has some features that only DSLRs have and it even surpasses some of the best DSLRs in the market right now. All this inside a compact body and it surely is a powerhouse. Sony has introduced some of their most famous innovations like the world’s fastest autofocus system as well as the immensely fast burst shooting to the DSC-RX100 V as well.
The design is familiar and most of the elements of the RX100 IV have been carried over to the RX100 V
Let’s start this in-depth review of the DSC-RX100 V with what you get inside the box. There isn’t much that you get inside the box and it is the most basic necessitates that you need to get the camera up and running. There are a few manuals and other documents that greet you as soon as you open the box. Next up you get the camera itself, in a tiny cloth covering. There is the battery, charger, charging cable and a couple of straps for the camera inside the box. That is pretty much it.
Design and Build Quality
The first thing that you might notice with the RX100 V is how similar it looks to the RX100 IV. Sony has not changed the design language and they’ve retained pretty much everything that you’ve seen on the RX100 IV. The internals have undergone an overhaul and we’ll get to that in just a moment. The lens used on the RX100 V is the same as that of the RX100 IV. The size and weight are also the same and you will have no trouble in handling this one.
A brand new change is the rotatable monitor which can be oriented at quite a few different angles
There is the retractable electronic viewfinder on the RX100V that comes with an anti-reflective ZEISS T coating. Around the lens is the intuitive control ring that can be used to control aperture, shutter speed, and a few other parameters. The rear side houses the rotatable monitor that oriented at quite a few angles. There is still no touchscreen on the RX100 V. Most of the internals and features are similar to that present in the Sony Alpha A6500.
Hardware and Performance
In short, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V might be the best premium compact camera in the world, but it has a few caveats. But we’ll talk about the negatives towards the end. Let’s start off with the positives. The biggest change is the introduction of the hybrid autofocus system on the DSC-RX100V. Previous models used contrast autofocus, but now the RX100 V uses a combination of phase detection autofocus and contrast autofocus for the best results.
There are 315 autofocus points which is nearly 65% of the new image sensor’s area. This ensures the best results while tracking and focusing. The super-fast autofocus system is not very prominent while shooting stills, but makes a huge difference while shooting videos. The change in subject is easily identified by the camera and focus shifts within a fraction of a second.
Another great improvement comes in the burst shooting department. The RX100 IV was able to shoot stills at 5 frames per second, but the RX100 V has upped the ante to a whopping 25 frames per second. We are talking about full resolution stills being taken at 25 frames per second. This is more like video and you can see it in action if you arrange them in a sequence. This is possible due to the front-end LSI chip that has been introduced in the RX100 V. The expanded buffer allows the storage of up to 150 shots in continuous burst mode. While this takes quite some time to write to the memory card, this feature is definitely awesome for capturing some amazing moments.
The super slow motion video feature has also been retained and improved on the RX100 V. The maximum frame rate has been increased to a whopping 960(NTSC) frames per second/1000(PAL) frames per second for amazing super slow motion videos. Check out some cool basketball shots in super slow motion below.

Even though the DSC-RX100 V is the best premium compact camera out there, it is not meant for everyone. There are quite a few limitations for this one as well as its predecessors. The small size of the camera means that the battery is a tad on the lower side. And the features like super slow motion videos and continuous burst shooting drains battery like water and you can literally see the battery going down. Another drawback is that 4K video can only be shot for a maximum of 5 minutes after which the camera begins to heat up. This is also a problem in the previous models of the RX100 series. There is still no touchscreen and the amazing autofocus system cannot be used in a touch-to-focus mechanism.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V is definitely a worthy upgrade over the DSC-RX100 IV. While the changes are few, they are massive indeed. There is the rotatable monitor, world’s fastest autofocus system, super slow motion videos and continuous burst shooting at 25 frames per second. While these features may not be wow factors for everyone, they serve a certain niche in the market. If you’re not into high-speed continuous shooting or you don’t need super-fast autofocus, the RX100 V might not seem all that appealing to you. You can easily go for the previous models, like the RX100 IV, RX100 III and be perfectly happy with it. But as far as the RX100 V is concerned, it is a great upgrade but not meant for everyone.
