Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V Review

  • 4.5 / 5
    • The good:
ergonomic handling, powerful zoom capability without compromising quality, high quality HD video and audio recording
    • The bad:
slow operational speed, slow startup time, pictures automatically compressed to JPEG file
Sony, in its effort to keep up with the growing demand for ‘superzoom’ bridge cameras, created the Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V, a gadget that may not be downright astounding compared to its rivals, but is certainly impressive. At first glance, the Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V may pass as a slightly smaller, entry-level DSLR camera. Lightweight and hardly space-consuming, this well-balanced camera also allows for easy handling. Its practical button layout also makes it possible to effortlessly access shooting modes and other features with a thumb even on a shooting stance. Some users will also find its eyepiece sensor, located on the right of the EVF (electronic view finder), quite a time-saver as it automatically shifts the camera to EVF or LCD viewing mode. Its tilting LCD also makes shooting far above or below eye level an easier task. Among its noteworthy assets is its 30x optical zoom lens, with an effective range of 27-810mm equivalent that yields photos with surprisingly crisp details and beautiful color contrast even at its maximum telephoto end. Its 16-megapixel ‘Exmor R’ back-illuminated CMOS also does wonders reducing noise in low light situations. The DSC-HX100V also boasts of an enhanced flash, relatively fast autofocus benchmark, and makes good use of its features like backlight correction HDR, panoramic view, and anti-blur. It can record videos in full 1080/60p HD in AVHCD format at 60fps and is adequately equipped to reduce background noise for higher audio quality. Several options are also readily available for different lighting and shooting situations. But photography is all about great timing, and timing is nearly impossible when you’ve got a camera that boots up and operates at glacial pace—such is the case with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V. While its other shortcomings can be overlooked, like writing captured images as JPEG and not as raw files, it’s the overall operational speed that will definitely test anyone’s patience. Heck, even switching to different shooting modes has a significant time delay. Sluggishness aside, there’s no questioning Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V’s integrity when it comes to producing high quality pictures and videos. Yes, there are no features here that is not already present elsewhere, and some of its rivals can even beat this compact camera head-on. Yet, the DSC-HX100V is, arguably, one of the best in its class. With an average retail price of about 350 USD, its true value lies in its effective use of its built-in features and scene modes, provided, of course, that the user has the extra patience for its poor responsiveness.
