Sony HDR-AS100 Review
Sony new HDR-AS100 camera is definitely something out of the ordinary. The device is small, very compact and lightweight. It resembles more of a video camera than a DSLR camera. Designed mainly for action shots and action videos, this camera is perfect for the everyday sports event or your hyperactive children in the park.
The Sony HDR-AS100 is a Splashproof POV action camera. With measurements of 24.2 x 46.5 x 81.5mm, the device is small enough small enough to fit in your pocket. At first glance, the AS100 may not be the most appealing but there is much to appreciate here. The camera features a memory card slot, microSD/SDHC card slot, several USB ports and an HDMI port. There is also a microphone port for those who require above average audio. With an SD output and Wi-Fi accessibility, there isn’t much this camera can’t do. The AS100 uses a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens that features a minimum focal distance of 11 7/8 inch and an aperture level of 2.8.
The Sony HDR – AS100 features an EXMOR CMOS sensor as well a BIONZ X image processor, both of which help produce clear and saturated images. With a 16:9-picture resolution ratio and around 18,900K pixels in the camera itself, the device is sure to impress. The color filter system, RGB primary color filters is not the most ideal unfortunately, but it does get the job done. Depending on the lighting, colors can appear drained or blended due to the below-average color filter but this should not be too big of a problem. For those concerned about stabilization, the AS100 uses the SteadShot Image Stabilization sensor and Steady Shot Mode for sharp images. The AS100 can take up to 30fps, this is not a very impressive rating but it will do.
The Sony AS100 comes with several common as well as unique features. For exposure adjustments, the device has several options: metering, scene modes, white balance, backlight and noise. There is also a minimum illumination level of 6 lux. The AS100 is also waterproof, dustproof, shockproof and has Wi-Fi connectivity. The Wi-Fi feature gives users the ability to control their camera without actually touching it. Users do so by connecting their Sony AS100 to their Android or iOS device. Users can also record video, both long-term video or in intervals of 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds. We recommend using the microphone jack for audio enhancement because the speaker on the AS100 is not ideal.
