Sony Alpha A6000 / 16-50mm Kit Review
Sony's NEX-6 was a complete departure from the company's usual lineup of mirror less cameras which slotted between the NEX-7 models and the NEX-5, and offered two unique things yet to appear on any Sony mirror less camera: ISO-standard hot shoe and a model dial. The new A6000 is in the same place in Sony's mirror less lineup, but in addition have significant new features and losing the NEX moniker found in its predecessor. While the processor and resolution have been updated, the most notable feature on the A6000 is its Hybrid AF system that is updated.
The Sony A6000 has 179 phase-detect points, with 92% coverage. This, coupled with the Bionz X processor, allows the camera to continuously shoot at 11 fps with subject tracking, according to Sony. The Sony A6000 model has the fastest AF performance available on the market as it stands. The new 24 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor comes with on-chip phase detection, but covers a larger frame area. Sony provides better AF tracking, especially when continuously shooting. The A6000 uses Sony's latest image processor - Bionz X - which promises improved detail and polished noise reduction as its improvements.
Users have access to a zebra pattern now with an adjustable threshold of 70 to 100+, and can output clean video over HDMI. The menus have switched to the Alpha style featured on the A7 and A7R, and the camera can be controlled now via a PC or Mac over a USB connection. The Wi-Fi feature is available with even more downloadable apps available. The Sony A6000's Wi-Fi system can remotely be controlled from a Smartphone, and photos can be transferred easily. You can adjust the major camera functions from your computer, although live view of whatever you're about to photograph is not possible.
The model comes with dust removal system that combines ultrasonic vibrations and a charge protection coating. When your eye approaches it, an infrared sensor activates the EVF. The mode dial and the main control dial on the top right of the A6000 can also adjust the aperture, speed of the shutter or exposure compensation. It has a pop-up flash, which is manually released, with a guide midrange mirror-less number of 6m at ISO 100.
The Alpha 6000 uses the NP-FW50 InfoLithium battery, which carries 7.7Wh of energy, translating into 360 shots per charge. The default charging is over USB, with an AC-to-USB adapter included in the box. Two ports under a plastic door on the camera's left side exist. Multi-interface port for USB charging and attaching a wired remote is on top. Below it is a micro-HDMI port for TV or video recorder connection. The a6000 can output uncompressed using HDMI, which is a big improvement over its predecessor.
