Sony Alpha 7S II Review
Sony have introduced the update to their Alpha 7S; the Sony Alpha 7S II. The new camera possesses some similarities to the Sony Alpha 7R II, including the ability to record 4K 4:2:0 8-bit video and the 5-axis stabilization system. The camera also comes with the capability of recording 4K video to an external recorder using an HDMI. The color depth is 8 bit 4:2:2, meaning the camera boosts 256 shades of each primary color. Better could be done, like the 10 bit system that has an incredible 1024 shades per primary color, but we are not complaining.
Like its predecessor, the Sony Alpha 7S II is built for low light shooting with a maximum sensitivity setting of ISO 409,600. The two cameras also share the presence of a full frame 12.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor, only that the A7S II has improved circuitry with better noise control. It also boosts of the incredible ability to record full HD footage with a frame rate of up to 120fps at 100 Mbps for super-slow motion playback. The overall impression is that this camera is capable of delivering sharper images and a smoother footage as it is optimized for video recording.
A7S II boosts twice the AF response time in the video mode compared to its predecessor, and more than six times the autofocus points with its incredible 169 points. In addition, the A7S II features Gamma settings which include Sony’s S-Log2 settings; which are for highlight preservation and the S-Log3 settings; which assist in capturing greater tonal range in shadows.
There are many customization options available for this device, allowing users to assign new buttons for different function as they please. Usually, videographers and photographers have varying preference over the location of various control buttons; hence this feature is made to accommodate all.
A7S II boosts a tougher exterior to its predecessor, with the introduction of a reinforced lens mount. The amount of magnesium alloy has also been increased for durability while the weather proof feature makes it even more desirable. Improved grip is central to the camera’s comfortable holding and the basic controls are placed for easy access.
One feature that would have made this camera better however is the phase detention element that is popular with the Sony Alpha 7 II. Also, the absence of built in neutral density filters represent a missed opportunity for Sony and this means photographers have to attach an external one to the lens when the need arises. Sony should also have done better with the customization feature as there are irregularities with the available functions. The Min menu largely resembles that of the Alpha 7R Mark II and the inclusion of a customizable screen would be very helpful.
