Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear Review
When Sennheiser released its Momentum headphones, the response was overwhelmingly positive. This naturally gave rise to the clamor for a more compact version, and Sennheiser’s move is to introduce their new On-Ear headphones of the series.
The Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear has the basic elements that made us fall in love with the earlier over-the-ear models, but with more user-friendly modifications. It looks visibly smaller and more compact, and replaced the leather with lighter materials. Not surprisingly, it is also decidedly the more budget-friendly option. When it comes to sound quality, the new Momentum offers up a strong sub-bass sound and a hard-hitting and detailed treble, while maintaining good balance across the frequency range. Treble clarity is certainly not a problem with this unit, and you can count on zero-distortions. It makes use of 40mm dynamic speaker units, which then deliver an overall high quality sound.
Instead of the usual chunky style and design that Sennheiser’s headphones have always been known for, this product boasts a simple and clean design that screams comfort and ease of use. Aside from being lightweight, these headphones are clearly made from high quality materials, from the molded plastic to the pads and the headband padding, which is made of a highly durable and water resistant suede-like fiber material called Alcantara. One major issue that most people find with headphones is the comfort when it comes to the pads, especially when they rest directly on the ears. They would be fine for several minutes to an hour but, beyond that, there would be twinges of discomfort, even pain. The Momentum definitely has the most comfortable ear pads, boasting two types of foam that are bound together to give your ears just the right pressure.
But this choice of material for the ear pads, as well as their on-ear instead of over-the-ear positioning, is not without its pitfalls. Noise isolation is not something you would expect, since the pads cannot completely block out the sound, especially when you are in a particularly noisy area. Those who seek complete isolation from traffic noise and such may want to consider other models over this one. Headphones are also prone to some minor damage, especially with regards to the cable. Fortunately, Sennheiser designed it to have detachable cables, so you can simply replace the cable instead of buying another set of headphones. As a bonus, you don’t get one, but two, cables, which feature an inline mic as well as three buttons that make it act as a remote for iOS devices.
The Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear is also, without a doubt, the more fun headphones, coming in a variety of colors that can only be described as playful and lively. Aside from the basic color of black, these headphones are also available in green, blue, brown, pink, red, and ivory. The accompanying zip-up case also acts as an effective protective case for these headphones, but for those who find it too bulky, it also comes with a drawstring nylon pouch. Some would probably say that choosing the On-Ear headphones over the over-the-ear ones is tantamount to settling for a lower quality alternative. Despite the minor gripes against it, these on-ear headphones have proven that’s not the case.
