Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB WiFi USB 3.0 Review

Seagate is known for the vast amount of storage devices they have created over the years. The company has yet to severely disappoint any of the customers and their newest addition, the Wireless Plus 1TB, is no exception. With 1TB of available storage space and built in Wi-Fi, it would be hard to be disappointed. The long battery life and ability to act as a portable drive are also some bonuses that make this drive a strong contender. Is it strong enough to beat out the competition though? Read on and decide for yourself.

The design of the Seagate Wireless Plus is very basic and actually kind of boring. With dimensions of 0,8 x 3,5 x 5 inches and dark gray color, the storage device can be put almost anywhere without being a distraction. There is a USB 3.0 port on one side along with an SATA port. These ports and the USB cable are used to connect the drive to a laptop, computer or tablet. Quick note, the Wireless Plus 1TB drive cannot be used as a portable drive or a media server at the same time. As for the portable drive feature, several folders are displayed when activated: videos, photos, music and documents. Users can make other folders is they desire. As for the media server feature, the Wireless Plus will organize the data on the device automatically into separate categories. The storage device automatically charges when connected to a computer and is able to be charged through a wall socket with the separate power adapter as well. However, there is no car charger for this device. If that is a problem, the device does work with most car chargers that are designed for other devices such as smartphones.

The wireless plus uses a single stream setup and has a top speed of 150mbps. It can have up to eight people using its wireless network at any one given time but only three get optimal performance and the ability to stream high definition content. Its portable storage is only useable in the 2.4ghz band; unfortunately the faster 5ghz band is not compatible with it. Seagate maintains a pretty decent balance between Wi-Fi speed and battery life for its size. The wireless is also ready for use with NTFS. It also contains the software to enable it to be used for Macs as well, which is a nice bonus to Mac users.

Being meant as a battery saver, it is not really made to have the best performance ever. It can take quite few hours to transfer large amounts of data such as 400GB. It works a bit better with USB 3.0 over 2.0, following the trend of 3.0 beating out 2.0. The Seagate wireless plus is great at carrying around all of your music photos and whatever else. To a person who is on the move it is certainly a great thing to have. Its battery life of 10 hours is certainly helpful. Being able to hold up to one Terabyte of data it can easily hold all of the average user’s movies music and PDF’s and photos that they have. Overall it is a great device and certainly worth trying out.
