Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s MZ-7KE512BW Review
Samsung has been doing really well in the world of SSDs and a couple of months ago, they released their latest flagship which is the Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s. This is an improvement from the Samsung 840 EVO and comes with never seen before 3D technology. So far, it’s the fastest SSD that we have. Here’s what you need to know before buying the new Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s:
Its main features include a 476 GB formatted capacity and a total capacity of 512GB. Awesome Samsung effort: it comes with a 10 year warranty! One of the outstanding features on the new 850 pro is its new 3D V-NAND technology that Samsung are so excited about. This is one of the biggest milestones that the SSD market has hit so far and we should expect positive results from the innovation. Normally, manufactures reduce the size of transistors in a bid to make them smaller and some other minor changes. However, with 850 pro, we are about to experience something totally new. This technology lines up the transistors in vertical layers instead of the usual horizontal layers. This is a significant change as now Samsung are able to stack up as many transistors as possible without compromising on size. What does this help? It ensures that the performance is efficient; no electricity leaks and kicks out the high production costs that are normally associated with fitting small transistors into the normal horizontal format.
The 850 pro uses the same triple-core MEX controller that is used by the 840 pro although Samsung had to give it a 100MHz speed boost. They didn’t change the 512 MB cache which they used on the 840 pro. This SSD is the best when it comes to endurance rating as it comes with 150TB while its competitors only make it to 100TB. From the 4 tests done by a couple of experts, the Samsung 850 pro was either leading or just below the leaders. After an Atto benchmark test the 850 pros started off at a slow pace but later caught up with the San Disk. After an IOMeter benchmark test for 30 minutes, the 850 pro emerged the best with a 7,826 score. This test measures the overall performance of a drive. It has a 35, 253 score in the write benchmark which is slightly below Crucial MX100.
All in all, this is a very good SSD for anyone looking for performance oriented drives. So far no drive beats the 850 pro when it comes to 4K and sequential transfers rates. Think about the improved endurance as well. We have heard time and again warnings about unnecessary writing to the disk but I think this won’t be a problem anymore thanks to the number of program release cycles that the 850 pro can handle. Although there might be better drives by the time 10 years are over, a 10 year warranty is a good deal altogether.
