The 3-Minute Samsung Galaxy Tab-A 7"; 8 GB Wifi Tablet Review
A Smaller Tablet With Good Value
By Graeme Messina | March 8, 2018
Features & Design: 3/5 ● Performance: 3/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Battery: 4/5
This is a compact tablet that is just a little bigger than a phablet device, giving it a smaller footprint than a traditionally sized tablet. The construction is good, as per Samsung’s usual exacting standards, but the casing is all plastic, giving it a less than premium feel.
The plastic is a little flimsy, and not everyone appreciates this kind of building material, or the overall aesthetic that it brings to the equation. The internal components are a little conservative, and offer limited performance for gaming and 3D applications.
Is it for you?
Smaller tablets definitely have their place in the home or office, especially where a light weight and highly portable device is needed. If you have younger users in mind, then this could be an ideal tablet for watching movies, videos and playing basic games.
Meet the Samsung Galaxy Tab SM-T280
This is by no means a flagship model, and it does not offer any fancy features or premium options. What it does offer is an affordable 7” display with average image and video quality, and a capable, but lacking camera. Wi-Fi is available only in the 2.4GHz range, providing better distance but lower transfer speeds. The battery life is god though, and should provide plenty of operation time per charge, providing the processing loads and screen brightness are not maxed out.
What we like
The Samsung unit is a good entry level tablet, and it has all the hallmarks of a reliable and durable device. The battery life is reasonable, connectivity options are there, for the most part, and the weight and size lends itself to a practical and easy to use experience.
The touch screen is responsive and accurate, and is bright enough in normal lighting conditions. For those that are wanting to give this device t their children or younger users, there is a kids mode that has been especially added for parental guidance features.
What we don’t like
The construction of this device is less than stellar, and the overall feel is quite plastic and flimsy. Although the screen is accurate and functional, those that are expecting to put the device through a bit of extra wear will note that the screen discolours quite easily when pressed with a little more pressure.
The internal components are also somewhat lacking, meaning that some applications will run quite slow, and will take a while to load. This is not really a problem for non-power users, but it is worth keeping in mind.
The exclusion of 5GHz band Wi-Fi is also disappointing, especially for those that have fast internet and are hoping to take advantage of streaming higher quality content to the device.
Should you buy it?
As a backup device or for users that don’t need advanced features or high performance specifications, then this is a good tablet with a smaller than usualy size of around 7 inches. Samsung has paid attention to this entry level segment of the market, and the design and form factor are very similar to those of a phablet like device. If you don’t need a high performance gaming tablet, or anything that is too large, then this could be a good choice for you.
