The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is a big phone with big performance. As with all flagship Samsung phones, we have a fingerprint sensor, water resistant design, gorgeous display, and generous battery life.
This is a great looking phone, and it has the price tag to prove it. When you combine this with a buggy fingerprint sensor and patchy voice controls, you get a plus size phone that needs a little more tweaking to justify the outlay of cash that you’ll need to drop to pick up one of these premium devices.
Is it for you?
If you have bigger hands than the average user then this plus sized flagship model is probably for you. It has excellent performance and features that deliver a fantastic smart phone experience, aside from some small bugs as mentioned previously.
Meet the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus
Samsung is certainly no stranger to the premium smart phone market, and this plus sized model is a worthy addition to its catalogue. Plus sized phones generally offer extended battery life and that all important screen real estate. Measuring at 159.5 mm × 73.4 mm × 8.1 mm (6.28 in × 2.89 in × 0.32 in), the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has a phenomenal viewing area.
What we like
This is a great plus sized phone, with just the right amount of features and premium materials. The main attraction is definitely the super AMOLED display that runs a crisp and vibrant resolution of 1140 x 2960. The phone itself is encased in in Gorilla Glass 5, with an aluminium frame. Glass phones are an interesting concept, and while they are tough and look great, it never hurts to get a phone cover to add an extra layer of protection to the equation.
The phone’s core hardware is impressive, with an octa core CPU and a dedicated Mali-G71 GPU. Operations are kept speedy with the 4GB of RAM in the 64GB models, and 6GB of RAM in the 128GB models.
These devices ship with Android 7.0 (Nougat) with an Android 8 (Oreo) update just around the corner being promised.
What we don’t like
There are a lot of really positive features that come with the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, but as with anything, there are a few issues that may detract from the product’s overall appeal.
The fingerprint sensor is rear mounted, which is a little archaic when you look at the front mounted home button implementations that some of Samsung’s competitors have successfully shown off in their own products.
Bixby voice is another area that needs work, as the efficacy of the system is pretty much a hit and miss affair. If you compare this to other voice command systems, then it becomes clear that it needs a bit of work.
Should you buy it?
This is a difficult phone to recommend under normal circumstances, for a few reasons. The primary reason would be because of its extra-large size, which would be ideal for only those with big hands, or a real need for a ‘phablet’ sized device. The fingerprint sensor placement, all glass construction and spotty voice control are all negatives that detract from the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus’s overall appeal. On the positive side, it performs really well and has a great CPU and GPU, with decent RAM and storage options, with an immaculate display.
