Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini Review
Samsung released Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini in July 2014 as a mini version of Samsung Galaxy S5 and as an upgrade version of S4 Mini. Compared to its big brother, Galaxy S5 Mini is more budget-friendly when it comes to the price. The body chassis is made from a plastic material, and it has a metallic band that wraps around it. It also comes with a smaller 4.5-inch screen but thicker body at a dimension of 131.11 x 64.8 x 9.1mm. With a small but bulkier body, it makes the smartphone fit comfortably in your hand. In terms of the look, the phone is almost a duplicate of its larger model. With a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and Super AMOLED touchscreen, the phone shares the same sharp and vibrant look that S5 has. You can definitely enjoy watching movies and videos with this compact smartphone.
Believe it or not, with a density of 326 pixels per inch, the S5 Mini has a pixel density similar to the iPhone screen! Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini comes with a 1.4GHz Quad-core processor and runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The smartphone has an 8-megapixel camera that impressively captures crisp and color-rich images, despite the fact that it is a downgrade of S5’s 16-megapixel camera. It is also capable of shooting 1080p HD videos and 2.1-megapixel images via its front camera. Another selling feature of Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is the IP67-certified body. It makes the S5 Mini highly resistant to water and dust. You can dip this Android smartphone into 1 meter deep water for a whole 30 minutes without having to worry about damaging it.
Plus, it also has long battery life. With a Li-Ion 2100mAh battery (it is a removal battery!), the S5 Mini smartphone can operate as long as 14 hours and 57 minutes with continuous video playback. This impressive battery life gives it an upper hand compared to its fellow mid-range rivals. Some other features of S5 mini include 16GB flash storage, 4G LTE, Micro SIM and finger-print reader. Besides, Galaxy S5 Mini also comes with a built-in accelerometer and a heart rate sensor at the back of the phone. These two features count steps and calculate the user’s heart rate and send the data to the Samsung’s app, Health App, for calories counting. However, the sensor makes the smartphone less suitable to be used together with Samsung wearables such as Samsung Gear 2 or Gear Fit as they serve the same counting purpose.
As a company that always strives to produce wide ranges of smartphones, Samsung has taken a smart decision releasing the Galaxy S5 Mini. Compared to the high-end market reached by Galaxy S5, the mini version caters more towards the mid-range market. Can this S5 Mini compete with other mid-range favourites? Yes, we think so! With a compact size, vibrant HD display screen and long battery life, it does compete well with many of its rivals such as Motorola Moto X, Nexus 5 and One Mini 2! However, when compared to its big brother Galaxy S5, the mini doesn’t stand.
