Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Review

Pack your ginormous DSLR and keep it in your cupboard for a while as Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-LX3’s long-awaited successor has landed in the market. The Lumix DMC- LX5 looks like the LX3, but it’s packed with a number of improvements – brand new lens, greater zoom range, better noise reduction, improved video codec for HD movie recording. The LX5 is a 10.1-megapixel creative compact digital camera that is available in classy black or crisp white. It is slightly bigger that its predecessor, but it can still fit your pocket to a T. The camera also provides a grip-friendly body so you wouldn’t have to worry that it will slip from your hand while you snap away. The retro-looking LX5 has a 3-inch LCD screen with 460k dot resolution that gives you a vivid translation of the image that your camera lens sees. If the LX5 is physically better that the LX3, it definitely is amped up when it comes to performance. Aside from starting up in a jiffy, the LX5 also performs faster when focusing and shooting in good and dim light compared to its forerunner and competitors. All these plus a better battery life, the LX5 is truly one of the aces in the compact camera world. The beauty of the LX5 boils down to the sharpness of the images it produces. It definitely gets five stars in this aspect. The camera generates bright and clear images under any light condition. Yes, even with low light. But we’re only talking about up to ISO 1600. If we go beyond that – and we’re talking about ISO 3200, 6400 and 12800 here – the resolution falls off and the noise level shoots up. The quality of images produced by this device is greatly attributed to its newly developed lens. The LX5 is geared with a new f/2.0 24mm ultra wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-SUMICRON lens that produces higher image quality. The lens allows for greater zoom range and higher shutter speed to produce utterly sharp images. The color of the photos is also satisfying even on default color mode. The colors in LX5 are distinct and the exposures are really good. The improvement in the white balance is also noticeable. However, the LX5 still experiences the same problem that the LX3 has when it comes to JPEG processing. The LX5 now has a better video codec that gives users a more enjoyable experience when producing videos. It can record 720p video just like the LX3 but can now shoot at 30fpx. Using manual exposure modes and zooming is also possible now in this device. With all these improvements, however, the video and sound quality is still not at par with the competition. The LX5 has an Intelligent Auto mode that automatically recognizes scenes and optimizes stabilization. It also has a quirky My Color mode that allows you to play with color-based special effects presets. It basically has all the essentials, and if you still want to power up your camera, you have a wide array of options of accessories that will fit your shooting style. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 may be considered as le crème de la crème. It’s packed with a lot of features, snaps photos like a thunderbolt, and best of all, it produces great images that are worth a million bucks.
