Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm F1.8 Review
The Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 lens is for the micro four thirds cameras. It is a portrait lens with one focal length and which operates quietly and speedily. It is a small and lightweight lens, 116g, which is what most users are looking for. However, it is plastic-built and not even with a tough plastic but with the less durable one.
The product exterior is very vulnerable to scratch either from your own nails or from the constant bumping against the body of the camera. Moreover, since this lens has a silver metallic finish which normally looks great with a black camera body, flaws on its smooth exterior are easily noticeable. Even the ring that is removable every time you need to attach the lens hood is not that fixed and steady. By the way, this lens doesn't come with a lens hood. You need to purchase one. The image quality of this Zuiko 45mm is surprisingly sharp with its pleasant colors and admirable Bokeh. It can’t be denied that this lens is a very nice portrait lens. And since this is a 45mm M43 lens, it is similar to 90mm on a full-frame camera which is normally linked to macro and portrait. The middle part of the image is sharp wide-open and if desired even the edges can be made sharp if lens is stopped down some more. This 45mm is a nice choice for Bokeh, true-to-life colors and very natural skin tones.
Its focal length fits well any city street photo shootings or stolen shots. This lens promotes a closer look on human faces and things. Although it isn’t close enough when it focuses and it is short of a distance scale just like most of the M43, images remain interesting to the sight. As for its price, it is definitely more than what others are willing to pay. Considering its size, weight and built, it’s not surprising for most photo enthusiasts to complain about its price tag. The additional complaint is the absence of the hood and the needed pouch or case. Buying them separately means added expense to the pricey cost of this lens. Luckily, there are cheap lens hoods and pouches available on the market. On the other hand, for those who have no budget issues, this lens is definitely a good buy.
This 45mm f/1.8 lens which is 90mm on a full frame is comparable with Nikon and Canon 85mm lens for full frame which already cost an arm and a leg aside from the cost of the camera body. This lens has earned a lot of compliments from users and some people even sold their other lenses just to buy this one. This is a very nice carry around lens and is very versatile. Its additional weight to the camera body is unnoticeable. Its capability is a pretty good compliment to any M43 wider primes. When it comes to quality, reasonable cost, reliability and portability, this Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.8 lens is definitely highly recommendable.
