By Graeme Messina | May 27, 2019

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Sound Quality 3/5

The Best:

The Nokia 8.1 is the best mid-range Nokia to date. With its adaptive 6.18” Full-HD Pure display it keeps the colors accurate and the content visible even in bright sunlight. The 8.1 has an amazing in the hand feel, and with its glass front and back with aluminum frame it feels really solid. The screen to body ratio is a whopping 81%.

The Nokia 8.1 has Android 9 Pie installed to give you faster performance, and it also features “artificial intelligence” options to give you more from your smartphone. The AI learns your preferences as you use the phone and improves over time keeping things running smoother for longer. The AI makes for an adaptive battery giving you longer battery life as it improves storage and app usage.

The Bugs:

There is no water resistance on this device, so you will have to be careful where you place it if you are near water. With it only being a LED display, you can’t get the same darkness and contrasts as you would from an AMOLED, but it is an IPS which helps people that wear glasses as it reduces eye strain.

Is it for you?

With Nokia devices running Android these days there is a lot to like about the smartphone manufacturer’s range of products. this device is really coming in strong as a mid-range phone contender giving you good images powered by the snapdragon 710 and android with long battery life. The 8.1 is really good value for money and offers a lot in different areas.

What we like

The high-performing and AI-powered Snapdragon 710 processor delivers the high speeds, while the new Adaptive Battery feature on Android 9 Pie helps provide 2-day battery life, and 18 W fast charging brick. The camera in portrait mode outperforms other mid-range devices. The advanced algorithms that this device has allow it to map out the distance of the objects in the background and gradually blur them out. The camera features are very good due to their collaboration with Zeiss. The camera is 4K and gives above average quality for mid-range devices.

What we don’t like

There is no stereo speaker set up so its does make the volume not as loud and may be tinny. The camera does not perform well in low light images tend to be a little grainy in night shots.

Should you buy it?

Overall the look and feel of the device is pleasing, offering you all the essentials for everyday use and still offering you a good price point. It is one of the better android smartphones out there. The audio for video recording is very good and holds up in noisy areas thanks to Nokia’s active noise cancellation technology
