Nokia 7.1 Review

The 3-Minute Nokia 7.1 Review

Nokia Returns to Form

By Graeme Messina | November 08, 2018

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Battery Life 4/5

The Best:

Buying a budget smartphone doesn’t mean that you have to make massive compromises, and the Nokia 7.1 exemplifies this by showing off some impressive styling and hardware at an excellent price point. There are 4GB of RAM in the 64GB model and 3GB in the 32GB version, and also dual SIM card functionality. Glass and aluminium styling complete the look, and give this phone a highly desirable aesthetic.

The Bugs:

There are not too many negatives to report with this model, as the overall construction and build quality are of a high quality. The CPU is by no means a flagship model component, and at this price point, it doesn’t have to be. The Adreno 509 GPU is adequate, but it won’t be breaking any records in the speed department.

Is it for you?

If you are looking at buying a mid-ranged, well priced and stylish unit, then this is definitely a contender. Nokia has always made well-constructed devices, and these modern 2018 smart phones are reminiscent of the Nokia of old, which is good news if you value longevity.

Meet the Nokia 7.1

The Nokia 7.1 is a 5.8 inch smartphone that offers great viewing quality and a 16M color viewing surface. Image quality is good because it has a 432 ppi display, which is also an IPS LCD, which offers excellent viewing angles. Protection is offered in the form of Gorilla Glass 3, which protects the 1080 x 2280 pixel screen beneath it. The viewing ratio is at 19:9, allowing you to enjoy wide angle content on your screen.

What we like

The Nokia 7.1 comes with all of the modern features that you would expect from a smart phone, such as a high quality display, hardened protective glass, and a long lasting 3060mAh battery, which packs enough stored energy to last throughout the day with no issues.

The phone also comes with an accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, and compass, which is all the normal device types that users have come to expect from a smart phone. The cameras are not phenomenal, but at 12MP and a dual 5MP setup, they are more than adequate for the average user.

There are great color options available, but not that many. There are 2 at present, Midnight Blue and Gloss Steel. Fast charging is available via a 9V 2A system that generates 18W when charging, which means that you can receive a decent charge in next to no time.

What we don’t like

Like many other manufacturers, Nokia has felt the need to add a notch to the top of the display, so that the rest of the phone can have as little bezel as possible. The knock on effect is that the viewing area is disrupted by an ungainly black section of screen. This isn’t a problem for most people, but the necessity of having such an obstruction is questionable.

Should you buy it?

Nokia has proven that you don’t need to break the bank in order to get your hands on a well-made, beautifully designed smart phone in the mid-range. This means that for a fraction of a flagship phone you can have almost all of the features that they have at a much lower price. There are certainly cheaper phones on the market with better internal components, but the Nokia 7.1 is a real stunner in the design department.
