It is not very often that gaming console manufacturers manage to reinvent the wheel, and Nintendo is one of those companies that seems to have done just that. What we have here is a portable gaming console that can be split to allow for multiplayer controller gaming, or docked for a traditional gaming experience in front of the TV.
The D-pad has a bit of a weird feel, due mainly to the weired placement of the analogue stick, which takes a bit of getting used to. When the console initially launched, there was a distinctive lack of titles an online services, but this is getting better slowly but surely.
Is it for you?
If you have ever played Mario brothers, or any other smash hit from Nintendo, then you are probably not going to be able to resist the charm of this unique little console. It packs all of the essential gaming goodness in a feel good package that only Nintendo could pull off.
Meet the Switch
It must be said that it isn’t very often that we get thrown a curve ball like the Nintendo Switch. Fair enough, the dust has settled and everyone is now more comfort with the concept behind the console, but at launch time people were a little sceptical about how well it would do. For the record, it has done very well indeed, with some well received titles to its credit.
What we like
There are a lot of things that don’t strike the average gamer as being particularly useful when choosing a gaming platform. Many modern consoles offer only a single dimension of gameplay, being that you can only enjoy the experience within the comfort of your own home. In order to game elsewhere, a separate, portable version of that platform must be purchased.
Nintendo managed to create a portable gaming platform that can be taken with you wherever you go, and shared with a friend. It’s just so Nintendo. That is what makes this console especially fun to play, with its many emerging titles that continue to come out.
What really surprised many gamers is the fact that the Nintendo Switch doesn’t disappoint in the graphics department. Many people were expecting visuals that were more in line with previous hardware releases from the company, but this is certainly not the case.
What we don’t like
The only real complaints that have come through about this device is the oddly shaped gaming controllers that make the analogue stick sit at a funny angle in a weird position. This is something that you do get used to though, but it would have been nice if a slightly more ergonomic solution could have been found.
Some users have complained about the left Joy-Con having issues with synchronizing but that seems to have been ironed out for the most part as it is not a common complaint at all.
Should you buy it?
If you enjoy Nintendo’s many titles, styling and branding, then purchasing this console is most certainly a no brainer. It offers a convenient gaming platform in the house, and a sharable, portable solution for when you are out on the road. Nobody else has successfully combined all of these elements together like Nintendo has, so buying a Switch should definitely be on your gaming agenda this year.
