Motorola Moto G (2014) Review

After a successful run with the Moto G last year, Motorola decided to try and get even more sales by upgrading it to the Moto G 2014. The Moto G was the best selling handset in the history of Motorola and so when they decided to add some features to the Moto G 2013, the results were amazing. The Moto G 2014 doesn’t have a different feel from its predecessor but it’s a bit bigger in size. Some of the modifications that make it the best budget Smartphone of this generation include but not limited to better sound quality, larger display screen, a better camera and a much improved design.

If you have used the Moto G 2013, you will agree that the need for a bigger screen was necessary especially if you spend most of the time browsing. They also added a 5 inch screen and stereo speakers on the front of the Smartphone. Both cameras have been improved and the Smartphone is still available under $200. Let’s have a look at some of the exciting features that Motorola offers with this budget phone of 2014.

The design is wonderful although it’s not really different from the original. We weren’t expecting a plastic glossy finish but that’s what Motorola had in store for us with the new Moto G 2014. This is one way of reducing the production cost, but Motorola did it on a way that doesn’t scream ‘cheap’. The quality isn’t that bad as it can withstand a few scrapes and bumps. It’s a bit heavier and wider than the original one and it isn’t something to cry about as it’s compensated with the large display.

For the business travelers, you can use 2 sim cards on the new Moto G which was lacking in the original one. This is a great feature as you can use dual sim cards when abroad just to save on the high international call charges. You can switch the sim cards manually or use the intelligent calling feature where the device judges the best sim to use depending on the call. The only setback is that this amazing device has is the lack of 4G LTE which they had in the original one but decided to remove it.

I think the addition of stereo speakers on the front of the phone is also a great addition as you are able to get all the sound clearly instead of it being buried in the rear of the phone. Moto also added a 5 inch screen which is also a good improvement but still seems like a disappointment compared to other premium smartphones. Motorola reduced the pixel per inch from 326 to 295 in order to accommodate the larger screen but it’s still standard quality for a budget Smartphone.

Although the phone has a larger display, it’s screen is less bright compared to other smartphones in its budget range. For instance, The Samsung Galaxy Alpha and the Acer liquid E3 are brighter than the Moto G but about three times the price of the Moto. All in all, if you are looking for a basic Smartphone for under $200, then you have the Moto 2014.
