Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Review
Roughly 11 years ago, the gaming world welcomed Microsoft’s first-born in its console family, the Xbox. Gamers had nothing but sweet words for the console itself, but passionately loathed the controller that came with it. Truly, “Fatty”, as it was fondly called, was a grotesque creature in every right: an oversized frame that the average-sized hand can barely grip, an interface that failed miserably in ergonomics, and that enormous central guide button that took up too much space. But many things can happen in 11 years, and Microsoft made the most of it. The new and improved Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller is now sexier with its compact and ergonomic design allowing better access to every button.
This version also sticks to the original interface for the most part with all the buttons and left/right sticks and triggers at their usual places. However, the “back” and “start” buttons were transferred to the guide button’s left and right flanks, respectively, and the left and right bumpers are now conveniently located on top, replacing the white and black keys. The “sync” button at the top-center side allows up to four controllers to communicate with the Xbox 360 making multiplayer gaming an absolutely tangle-free experience. What’s more, this Microsoft wireless controller has an impressive response time bested only by its wired counterpart. The Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller also has a headset input at the bottom which would fit the mobile phone standard 2.5mm minijack. But to utilize its volume adjustment and mute capability, one has to buy the customized Xbox 360 headset. It can last up to 15-20 hours running on either two AA batteries or the Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack. And if it did come to the point when the battery runs out in the middle of a game, the Xbox Play and Charge Kit, which also serves as a smart charger, will come in handy.
As promising as it is, the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller takes a big toll on a gamer’s wallet. At around 55 USD, it ranks among the most expensive in its line. To make it worse, one has to buy several add-ons to fully unleash its potential. But for players who are after quality and hassle-free gaming, they can never go wrong with the Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller.
