Microsoft Surface Go 256GB - 8GB Intel 4415Y Review

The 3-Minute Microsoft Surface Go Review

The Surface Resurfaces with a Fantastic 10” Inch Tablet

By Graeme Messina | January 27, 2019

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Sound Quality 4/5

The Best:

This is a well-designed piece of kit, sporting all of the features and capabilities that made the original Surface products so appealing. This is a much smaller surface than what we have seen in the past, coming in at just 10” inches. It has a great display and sounds great, thanks to its surprisingly decent speakers.

The Bugs:

Not everyone will appreciate such a small tablet, especially if it is going to be used in a work environment. It is a good lightweight tablet to take with you as you travel or commute, but it is not really a laptop replacement, as such, even though you can buy a keyboard for it. That’s right, still no accessories come bundled with the Surface.

Is it for you?

If you are a home user, or a student that can’t be bothered to drag around a full sized laptop with you everywhere you go, then this could be a good choice for you. It features friendlier, rounded edges making it a much more approachable device, and the keyboards that you can get for it are also well made and great to type on.

Meet the Surface Go

It is easy to see why a smaller device is so compelling for some, thanks to its light weight and minimal storage foot print that it has when travelling. While there are plenty of devices that can be purchased for the Surface line up of products, some people might have liked for a keyboard to be bundled with this unit. The display has a resolution of 1920 x 1200, which isn’t great for watching content like movies, but as a desktop or productivity device it does the job nicely.

What we like

The battery life is okay, nothing to write home about, promising around 9 hours of uptime on a single charge. These kinds of figures are notoriously inaccurate from manufacturers in general, mainly because they cannot predict the workloads that each person will put their respective devices through.

We like the processor and memory allocated to this device, and it handles all of the basic tasks that you would expect from a mid-ranged tablet in this segment of the market.

This tablet finds itself comfortably in the low to mid-range on the performance front, especially when compared to the other Surface variants that are out there. On the GPU end of things there is an Intel Graphics 615 that does all of the heavy lifting, which isn’t saying too much as it is a standard chipset on most entry level laptops.

What we don’t like

It is hard not to like this device thanks to its price allocation, making it an affordable surface for students and people on a budget. We would have liked there to be a few accessories included in the package.

Should you buy it?

For basic office work or note taking for students this is as close to a laptop replacement as you are going to find, thanks to the fact that it runs Microsoft’s Windows 10 Home.  This means that most applications like office productivity suites and internet browsing will behave exactly as users have come to expect from a traditional laptop. This is not a gaming device, but a mid-ranged ultra-small laptop replacement for users on a budget.

  • The Good :
