Leica Q Typ 116 Review
The Leica Q Typ 116 is not a camera designed for everyone, but if you are sure that its features will benefit your photographic skills, you should definitely check it out. The price tag is quite steep, but the features are worth it, so you can be sure that you will not be let down by the camera when you decide to put it to work. Leica managed to develop a camera that brings together the classic and the modern in the shape of Typ 116, and there are plenty of perks to enjoy upon purchasing it.
What makes the Leica Q Typ 116 such a niche camera, though? First of all, the 28mm lens is a rather rare setup, especially for a compact camera. There are not too many people who enjoy this value for the lens, but if you are one of them, you cannot go wrong with the Leica. There is another niche element when it comes to the camera, the full-frame sensor. You can easily learn how to take a full body shot and separate it from the background with f/1.7 settings, but close-up portraits will get tricky soon enough. The 28mm lens can have its settings switched to 35mm and 50mm, but you will face some resolution changes. At 28mm, the camera can shoot photos up to 6000 x 4000 pixels. If you switch to 35mm, you can take photos up to 4800 x 3200 pixels, and if you choose 50mm, you can take photos up to 3360 x 2240 pixels.
The ISO range of the Leica Q Typ 116 is quite generous, far superior to what competitors offer. You can go from 100 to 50,000, and thus take photos in a wide range of environments, even if the light is not the best. However, there is no flash available, so you will have to work around this; the ideal solution is to use an external flash. There are 5 preset white balance settings, and you can create two custom ones. There are also about ten different scene modes for use when you do not have enough time to set up everything manually.
You can take burst shots at up to 10 frames per second so as to capture a fast-moving scene and choose the best photo at a later time. The Leica Q Typ 116 can also shoot videos at Full HD standards. The 1920 x 1080 resolution is supported at both 60 and 30 frames per second. If you want to quickly share your content on social media, you can pair your camera with a smartphone through Wi-Fi. Moreover, you can control the camera's features through the smartphone. The LCD screen features touchscreen support and it has a 3-inch size, providing live views of the scene about to be shot. The viewfinder is electronic and provides 100% coverage of the scene.
