Leica D-Lux 7 Review
The 3-Minute Leica D-Lux 7 Review
Iconic Styling on a Modern Platform
By Graeme Messina | January 27, 2019
The Specifics:
Features & Design: 4.5/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Sound Quality 4/5
The Best:
This is a next generation compact digital camera that promises a lot of features and quality for the price point. It has a strong frame and high quality components that make this a device that is sure to last for a very long time. It has a 17 Megapixel sensor that is great in low light settings.
The Bugs:
Owners of the previous version of this device might be disappointed that the Lightroom license that used to ship with these cameras is no longer a part of the deal. This is not Leica’s fault as Adobe has moved that product to a monthly license model.
Is it for you?
This is a camera that has a lot of advanced features without being overly difficult to use, especially in the menus department. Menus are easy to navigate and intuitive to operate. If you are looking for a camera that can take high quality pictures, as well as 4K video at 24 or 30fps, then this is a great choice.
Meet the Lecia D-Lux 7
This camera is available in two different color schemes, plain black, or black and silver. These are both classic colors, so it is entirely up to you to decide which one you prefer. There are tons of accessories to be had on this model as well, from protective covers, to portable USB battery chargers. It features an advanced optical stabilization platform that gives users a better chance of capturing the shot when it matters the most.
What we like
We really like the simple styling, basic menus and abundance of camera accessories that are available for this device. We also really like the Leica FOTOS app that is available on mobile devices, making it really easy to integrate your camera and your phone together when you are reviewing your pictures.
There is an action sequence function that takes 30 frame bursts in 4K photo mode, which lets you choose your favorite of the batch, making sure that you get only the best picture for your efforts. Another unique feature that this device has is something called focus stacking. This helps to overlay pictures and creates a much more realistic sense of depth in your photos.
The rear LCD is sharp and easy to read, providing 1.25 million pixels for easy viewing. The overall ergonomics and grip of this camera are also very good, making it a pleasure to use.
What we don’t like
This is quite a heavy camera, and while we don’t mind the weight, there are some that might not like it too much. As this camera is capable of taking 4K video footage it would have made sense to add a microphone in put jack into the equation. This would have elevated the camera’s capabilities somewhat, and it feels like a missed opportunity here. There is also no headphone jack for playing back sound in private.
Should you buy it?
This is a capable camera with some really good features, and it takes really good images. Unfortunately, there are some small issues that need to be sorted out, but other than that it is a great device that will be more than capable for the majority of photographers that need a reliable point and shoot device.
