The 3-Minute Intel Core i9-9900K Review
Intel Stamps its Authority on the CPU Market
By Graeme Messina | January 07, 2019
Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5
The attest Intel CPU has come out of the gates with 8 cores and 16 threads, and is basically looking to take on Team Red core for core in the numbers department. The clock speeds that this flagship CPU is endowed with are absolutely phenomenal for such a mainstream piece of hardware. What this all means is that you can expect a gaming performance that will not be easily equalled any time soon.
Bugs? Not so much. Pricing is probably going to be the only bug that gets in the way of your gaming experience. After you budget for your CPU, you need to factor in a motherboard, memory and a graphics card that can take advantage of all of the features that this CPU brings to the table.
Is it for you?
In order to find out if this CPU is for you, you need to ask yourself two questions. The first, do you like games? If your answer is yes, then this CPU is for you. The second question that you need to ask yourself is, do you use your computer for video editing, graphic design or 3D rendering? If your answer is yes, then this CPU is definitely for you.
Meet the Intel Core i9-9900K
This CPU has been designed as a direct response to AMD’s Ryzen range of CPUs, and it is an appropriate one. The i9 pushes threads and cores to the limits of the technological barrier, and you can expect phenomenal performance, albeit at a cost.
What we like
Intel found a reason to get their act together and start pushing the boundaries of performance thanks to healthy competition from AMD’s Ryzen range of CPUs, so we can’t credit Intel for all of the innovation unfortunately. But now that the CPU is on the market it is easy to see that Intel is indeed still capable of not only creating CPUs that are able to keep up with the competition, but also to outdo them.
But that’s not to say that we are comparing apples with apples (no pun intended in the technological sense), there is a financial barrier that will exclude many people from this particular model of CPU. Similar competition in the market will clock in at around half the price of the Intel Core i9-9900K.
What we don’t like
Pricing is about the only thing that we don’t like about this CPU from an enthusiast’s point of view. If there are any bugs with this CPU other than the cost of it, then it is probably the temperatures that it runs at. This is not an economical, cool CPU. It is a flagship that does not compromise, and the heat generation attests to this.
Should you buy it?
If you are a gamer with an unlimited budget, then it is easy to say yes, you simply have to buy this CPU. If however, you are looking to purchase a more modest CPU and you have less processor intensive operations in mind, then you certainly will not go wrong with basing your next PC build around this particular CPU, especially if you are considering a water cooling setup.
