Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 5/5 ● Value: 4.5/5 ● Battery 5/5
The Huawei Mate 10 is a truly premium device. With an excellent aesthetic, high-quality camera, and an incredible amount of power under the hood, the Mate 10 is dressed to impress.
There are a few aspects that hold the Huawei Mate 10 back, despite the fact that it’s all around an excellent phone. The lack of waterproofing is unfortunate, and the operating system leaves much to be desired.
Is it for you?
If you’re looking for an alternative to flagships such as that from Samsung and Apple, the Huawei Mate 10 offers a premium device with some of the most impressive performance on the market.
Meet the Huawei Mate 10
While Huawei has been a major name in their home country of China for quite some time, they’ve only recently set their sights on a western market. With the Huawei Mate 9, the company gave customers a competitive alternative to more recognizable brands. With the Mate 10, Huawei has stepped up their game and delivered a device that can compete with the best that luxury phones of this season.
What we like
There’s a lot to like about the Huawei Mate 10. The metal and glass design gives the phone a premium aesthetic, and the phone certainly looks more luxurious than its predecessor. The camera is one of the best around, and delivers high-quality shots. Perhaps most notable about the lens is the excellent low-light performance, ensuring you’ll get the perfect shot even in the evening.
The power in the Huawei Mate 10 is remarkable, and the manufacturer’s proprietary Kirin 970 chip keeps up with - or even exceeds - the power of flagships from my recognizable manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, and Google.
The phone’s battery is larger than average, ensuring you’ll stay connected throughout your day. The unique desktop mode allows your phone to function as a computer of sorts as well, allowing the Huawei Mate 10 to play double duty.
What we don’t like
While the Huawei Mate 10 is all around an excellent device, there are a few minor setbacks that mar what would otherwise be a near flawless phone. Perhaps the biggest offender is the Huawei EMUI. While EMUI isn’t necessarily a poor operating system, it’s not a UI that translates well to a western audience. Users used to phones from the likes of Apple or Samsung may run into a bit of a learning curve while adjusting to their new Mate 10.
Other than that, the main drawbacks are the lack of waterproofing and no support for wireless charging. With such an expensive phone, it’s important that it stay protected from any accidents. With the majority of flagships featuring some pretty extensive waterproofing in recent years, it’s definitely a disappointing omission.
Should you buy it?
Overall, it’s easy to recommend the Huawei Mate 10 Pro as a viable alternative to other high-end flagships. While Huawei might not be nearly as established as other companies when it comes to the western smartphone market, they’ve demonstrated with the Mate 10 that they have what it takes to establish themselves as a serious competitor.
