HTC U11 Review

The 3-Minute HTC U11 Review

Way more than just squeezable sides

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4.5/5 ● Performance: 4.5/5 ● Value: 4/5

The Best:

As a solid high-end phone with great specs and a unique design, the HTC U11 ticks many of the right boxes. A solid battery, vivid display, and a powerful camera round out the phone to make it a contender as one of the top smartphones in today’s market.

The Bugs:

The beautiful aesthetics of the HTC U11 are also a drawback; the mirror finish attracts fingerprints and can be difficult to get a solid grip on. The lack of a headphone jack and flawed Edge Sense system are also significant issues.

Is it for you?

If you’re looking for a high-end smartphone with a unique look, the HTC U11 might meet your needs. Regardless of what you think about the squeezable sides, solid performance and a beautiful design make for an Android experience that can compete with the best of them.

“The HTC U11 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a unique contender in the high-end smartphone scene.”

Meet the HTC U11

HTC has struggled to live up to expectations in recent years. With several of its recent flagships failing to capture the attention of a competitive market, the HTC U11 marks a return to the forefront of the high-end smartphone arena.

The phone features a beautiful glass mirror finish, an excellent camera, and a battery that will last all day. The HTC Sense operating system provides a quality Android experience with very little bloatware and some very impressive power.

What we like

One of the biggest draws of the HTC U11 is the gorgeous mirror finish. The design shimmers in light and reflects different colours depending on the angle.

The uniqueness of the HTC U11 doesn’t stop there. The new Edge Sense technology allows you to navigate by squeezing the sides of the phone. To access your favourite apps or the camera, simply apply some pressure to the phone’s flexible edges.

The HTC U11 provides you with the power you need to handle even the most demanding activities, a battery that lets the phone last most of the day on a single charge (and to be recharged quickly), and a vibrant 5.5 inch HD display. The addition of a 12 MP camera and some of the best smartphone audio available makes the HTC U11 a serious contender in the smartphone market.

What we don’t like

We’re pretty happy with the HTC U11, but a lot of the negatives are associated with the phone’s mirror finish. While we mentioned that this unique design is a major component of what makes the phone so good, it also makes fingerprints glaringly noticeable. The finish also makes the phone rather slippery to hold, so either be extra careful or invest in a nice case.

While Edge Sense is cool, it has a lot of room for improvement. HTC wants to let you operate your phone with one hand. While innovative, it’s far from perfect. Between needing to remember what the different squeeze lengths will do and the fact that it doesn’t work in all apps (yet) make it more gimmicky than useful (again, for now). Using a squeeze to pause or play your music would be amazing, but it’s not something that you can do right now.

Following in the footsteps of Apple’s iPhone 7, the HTC U11 is without a headphone jack. This unfortunate drawback makes you choose between charging your phone or using headphones. That said, we expect that more phones will follow suit - for better or for worse.

Should you buy it?

If you want a smartphone with a unique and beautiful design that packs some serious power, the HTC U11 is a great option. Fans of the Android operating system will be thrilled with the HTC Sense operating system and the squeezable sides, while far from perfect, are unique and have some interesting potential.

The lack of a headphone jack and easily smudged body are detractors, but the phone more than makes up for it with one of the best audio designs we’ve ever seen on a mobile device - a perfect perk for music lovers.

In the end, the HTC U11 is an interesting choice for anyone looking for a unique contender on the high-end smartphone scene.
