HTC Desire 820 Review

HTC Desire 820 is in the line of the Desire 816, which was already a success, especially in the Asian market. The large 5.5 inch display of this smartphone makes it a useful phablet to for the average smartphone/tablet user and it boasts some specs that should tickle you:

What the guys down there at Taiwan did was bringing in a better processor, Gorilla Glass 3 screen protection and better front facing camera for the Selfie lovers. However, the HTC camp just offered a basic camera and so expect some grainy selfies in the process or some noisy wide shots. The screen resolution was also compromised. Otherwise, it’s very much similar to the HTC Desire 816 in terms of features except the few upgrades. Is it really worth it?

Some people might not be impressed by the HTC Desire 820 at first especially due to the low screen resolution. Nevertheless, if you look closer you will realize that a phablet working on four 1 GHz cores and four 1.5GHz is something to consider. Even better, the HTC camp threw in 2GB of RAM so you can have a better performance when multitasking. 13MP rear camera is enough to take good pictures in high lit areas and HTC added an 8MP front facing camera which will make the difference for social media lovers. Although the HTC Desire Eye beats it with its 13MP front facing camera, it’s doing really well as compared to the likes of Nokia Lumia 735 and HTC One Mini 2 which are working on 5MP sensors.

Although it’s here to challenge other 64 bit phablets, we will have to wait for the Android 5.0 Lollipop to get the maximum power from this beauty. For now, users will have to use Android Kit Kat. This phablet weighs slightly above 150g and that makes it a perfect competitor for the higher end smartphones such as the LG G3, Galaxy Note 4 and iPhone 6 plus. However, you will have to understand some compromises as you will be paying a fraction of the mentioned phone’s prices to get a hand on the 820.

Let’s talk about its battery: a 2600mAh that will keep your Desire 820 alive for about a day (around 15 hours) if you use your screen at full lighting during 3 to 4 hours per day. Not bad, not extremely impressive either but you sure have a lot of settings to play with to make it last a little longer.

Judging from its price tag, the HTC Desire 820 is a good phablet in terms of value. It won’t stand out when competing with other high end phablets but it clearly gets the job done. It comes with a good mix of quality features, an average battery life and good hardware specs. If you don’t mind the dual sim features and want a phone with a large screen, the OnePlus could be a better alternative and comes at a lower price. It will offer a better chipset and a better display. If you don’t mind the screen size, you can check out the 5 inch Huawei Honor 6 and Lenovo Vibe X2. If you aren’t finicky when it comes to brand names, the Yureka YU is a great budget phablet that is 4G-enabled.
