The 3-Minute GoPro HERO7 Black Review
GoPro Returns with their latest flagship device
By Graeme Messina | October 8, 2018
Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Battery Life 4/5
The GoPro Hero 7 Black is a 4K action camera that is capable of excellent video and pictures and has an almost gimble like video smoothing technology called hypersmooth. GoPro have also revamped the time lapse features, making TimeWarp fun to use, and some very good tweaks have been made to the UI to allow for improvements in overall functionality.
Although the changes that have been made are all overwhelmingly positive, there are one or two small issues that can be somewhat annoying. Voice activated commands can be a little tricky to get right consistently, which is true of most devices that employ the technology. Some people have complained about the way that slow motion footage can only be viewed through the app or software that comes with the GoPro, but for experienced GoPro users, that should not be anything new.
Is it for you?
If you enjoy taking high performance video and pictures from a small device, then this could certainly be the action camera for you. It offers amazing video stabilization and offers some of the best video capture quality on the market for an action camera.
Meet the GoPro Hero 7 Black
The GoPro Hero 7 Black is the top-tiered device in the GoPro stable of products, and it is easy to see why. It gives its users the option to film in 4K, 27K, 1080p and 720p, and offers video stabilization in all resolutions. This means that bumpy roads will no longer ruin your footage with too many jerks and jolts.
What we like
GoPro are the market leaders in action cameras for a reason, their hardware is top notch. This camera takes great action shots, meaning that video and pictures are once again the main attraction here.
GoPro are well aware of the features that have traditionally made all of their cameras such a success, and to this end, they have kept all of the features that users enjoyed about the GoPro Hero 6. It has a similar design to the Hero 6, and is waterproof up to 10m under water.
The battery system of charging works incredibly well on all GoPro devices, and this is certainly no exception. The GoPro Hero 7 Black competes well with some high-end cameras, and while it is not cheap, it is still just a fraction of the cost.
What we don’t like
The GoPro Hero 7 Black is an excellent camera, but it doesn’t differentiate itself too much from the previous flagship model, the GoPro Hero 6 Black. The touch display can be a little tricky to use in direct sunlight for some people, but this isn’t really a criticism of the camera. Having additional colours would also be a good feature for future GoPro cameras, but that is probably not on the cards.
Should you buy it?
If you are into action sports like skateboarding or surfing, then yes, this is definitely the camera to have. It features all of the best image stabilization technologies that are available, and they do it well. With so many imitations on the market, is it still worth forking out large sums of cash for the privilege? Yes it is, especially if you value the technology housed within such a small package.
