GoPro HERO 3: Black Edition Surf Review
The GoPro HERO3: Black Edition Surf is the most advanced wearable and mountable camera ever. The HERO 3: Black Edition Surf comes bundled with a large mount to suit any board, waterproof to 197' (60m) and capable of capturing ultra-wide HD video or time lapse photos at a rate of up to 30 photos per second.
With the Built-in WiFi chip, GoPro App compatibility and the included Wi-Fi Remote, the HERO3: Black Edition Surf is the most versatile GoPro yet. The camera comes with a water-proof case and a variety of mounts. Each camera in the HERO 3 lineup features built-in Wi-Fi and is 30 percent smaller, 25 percent lighter and two times more powerful than previous GoPro models. The weight reduction is very welcome for anyone that's ridden with one atop their head. The HERO 3: Black Edition Surf is capable of capturing ultra-wide angle HD video at 1080p-60 frames per second (fps), 1440p-48 fps, 720p-120 fps, 2.7Kp-30 fps and 4Kp-15 fps. It can also capture 12MP photos at an astounding rate of 30 photos per second. The plastic housing is tough enough to be knocked, dropped, drenched and thrown about.
Fogging inside the case has been reduced. In a quick head-to-head using a helmet-mounted camera on a chilly mountain bike trail, the HERO 2 misted up after 10 minutes, whilst the HERO 3 showed no misting at all. You can take the camera underwater without having to buy separate dive housing. Once inside it will produce good quality images with decent colour reproduction. It uses Micro SD cards (up to 64GB) instead of full-sized. There’s no built-in 3.5mm mic jack, but there is a mic adapter cable sold separately. This model is smaller so the battery is smaller, which is not good news. In continuous shooting you can get just about 45 minutes before the battery goes south. You can buy additional batteries and an optional battery pack that extends time but makes the camera about the size of the original Hero.
That’s okay if size isn’t your main issue. Paired with the BacPac, you even get a touchscreen LCD that helps you understand what you are actually shooting. The buttons are easier to deal with but there are more nested menus than ever. You can use the Wi-Fi controller that ships with the HERO 3, but you can also control the camera with an app for iPads or iPhones. The HERO 3's reduced-distortion, 6-element spherical lens combines with user-selectable Ultra-wide, Medium and Narrow field-of-views to deliver more perspective-capture options than ever before.
And with the totally updated flat-lens waterproof housing that delivers stunning image sharpness both above and below water and you've got one of the most powerful and durable image capture solutions on the planet. Overall, the GoPro HERO 3: Black Edition Surf is an amazing and robust camera that can go all the places you can, and some places you can't. Better, faster, and now with higher-end video modes more suited to the pro market, it's a serious little piece of kit.
