GoPro HERO 3+ Black Edition Review
Versatility is certainly never a bad quality for any device to have. This is especially true for action cameras, and that is what is on offer with the GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition, one of the flagship models of GoPro.
With a few key upgrades, the GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition is a worthy, and better, replacement of the GoPro Hero 3. The first thing you will notice is its size and weight. It is considerably smaller and lighter – it weighs only 2.6 oz – than its action camera predecessors. This more compact version means the housing is also smaller and the covering of the lens made much simpler. This does not, however, lower the performance of the lens. In fact, images captured by the GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition are significantly sharper, details are more pronounced, and the captures remain crisp regardless of the lighting conditions. Its new Auto Low Light feature works by cutting the camera’s frame rate in half when the light level is low. This improved model also introduces GoPro’s SuperView mode, which utilizes a square video camera sensor, allowing users to record scenes in widescreen. One drawback, though, is some distortion in the objects caught on the video. However, considering that this small camera offers 4K video resolution, this can be considered as a minor transgression.
Another impressive feature of the GoPro Hero 3+ is the brand trademark smartphone app, which allows the camera to seamlessly work with any smartphone, transforming it into a capturing extension with the ability to take wide-angle, high-resolution images. You can instantly turn your smartphone into a remote control or even a viewfinder for taking better pictures. Wi-Fi connectivity is another feature enjoyed by GoPro users, but with the Hero 3+ Black Edition, they have the added convenience of using a Wi-Fi remote control, which can control up to 50 different cameras. The trade-off, however, is battery life. Unfortunately, the battery life of this unit can only be described as “very disappointing”. Although it claims to have 30% longer battery life than previous GoPro action cams, the battery still drains out after around 2 hours of continuous recording. The fact that it does not come with a separate charger for the battery does not help any. You still have to connect it to a USB port in order to charge the battery.
Sound capture is also greatly improved in this action cam, which makes for better video recording. The microphone is now able to catch even the slightest sounds; its ability to reduce wind noise is also improved. This camera also comes with a waterproof case that is so tough and durable, so you can bring it to any of your action-packed adventures. The GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition may be smaller and lighter, but it is without a doubt, the best GoPro action camera so far. New users may have a hard time getting the hang of it at first, but once they do, they won’t be able to think of a better camera to bring with them on their adventures.
