It is not very often that an active sportswear manufacturer manages to create a watch that looks and feels very much like a normal everyday time piece, but Garmin have managed it with the Vivoactive 3. It features GPS, smart notifications via your smartphone, top end sports tracking features, and more.
There are a few bugs that need to be ironed out, namely the limited iOS support for things like responding to text messages directly from the watch. The base model in this range also doesn’t support music playback, which seems like an extreme cost cutting measure as it limits the overall functionality of a sporting tool by quite a big margin.
Is it for you?
Active sportspeople and outdoor types will really enjoy making use of this watch, while still being able to use it for wearing as a standard wrist watch at the office and everyday life. If fitness and training is something that you are actively measuring in your day-to-day life, then this is one of the slimmest and smartest looking fitness watches that we have seen.

The watch is also a valuable tool to help you to track and monitor your sleep patterns and duration. It can provide valuable insights into the way in which you are taking in your sleep. Other than the fitness and directional capabilities thanks to the Garmin’s GPS unit, there is also a payment system capability built in as well. This makes it possible for runners to stop in and grab a water or snack without having to worry about carrying cash or a wallet with them.
What we like
This is a comfortable watch to wear, with its rounded face and well thought out watch strap. It is light weight too, coming in at a miniscule 43g in total. This is ridiculously light when pitted against a traditional fitness watch.
Charging is quick and easy thanks to the soft 4 pin connector on the underside of the unit, and the pins are slightly recessed to that the wearer cannot feel anything uncomfortable on their wrist.
One of the good design aspects of this watch is that the orientation of the screen can be flipped, depending on the left or right handedness of the wearer. This is not something that can be accomplished with a standard mechanical watch.
What we don’t like
As previously stated, not all iOS features are available with this device, such as being able to answer text messages directly from the watch.
Not everyone is going to like the styling of the watch, either, but there are enough color options to keep things interesting for the average wearer.
The GPS does tend to drain the battery a little more than when it is not activated, so that is something to be aware of if you do not need to use it.
Should you buy it?
This is a great in-between device for fitness enthusiasts that also wish to take the watch with them to work or out on the town. The heartrate monitor and GPS are really good features that work really well on this watch, which is really interesting considering how slim the watch is. Overall, this is a good product at a reasonable price point.
