    • The bad:
      Small Display, Pricey, No Camera

The Garmin eTrex 30 is a perfect companion for hikers, hunters and geocaches with its reliable satellite navigation.

The eTrex 30 is small, compact and ergonomic, measuring a mere 4-inch high, 2.1-inch wide and 1.2-inch thick and weighing only 5 ounces with a pair of AA batteries in place. It is packed with a USB cable and an owner's manual in English and 6 other languages. This handheld GPS offers a 2.2" 65k colour sunlight readable display, a shaded relief worldwide base map, internal memory and a microSD slot. It has a 3-axis electronic compass that shows users heading even when it is not held flat. It also features a barometric altimeter that gives precise elevation readings.

Found on the left hand side of the device are the up and down arrow buttons and menu key and on the right hand side are the power/backlight and back buttons. The front features a mounted joystick that also serves as an enter button. The eTrex 30 has an easy-to-use menu driven software package that allows users to access most functions via a list of 25 main pages. It also features sharp curved lines, small fonts and other fine chart details. On the first cold start, the device takes a couple of minutes to lock a position, but after that, it guarantees no trouble locking onto satellites and in giving a GPS in mere seconds.

Users may still experience slight lags though when navigating menus and a few seconds of delay on map redraws when panning the map. The eTrex 30 allows downloads of hints, descriptions, and other information needed about a cache right to the GPS unit from Open Caching or Geocaching, making it compatible with paperless geocaching. It also fits with Garmin's Topo 24K and inland lakes maps as it includes hunt/fish calendar and other features that hunters will definitely appreciate.

Not to mention that the eTrex 30 is waterproof to IPX-7 standards, meaning it can be submerged at 3 feet depth for up to 30 minutes. Overall, the Garmin eTrex 30 is a top notch navigation system with its high resolution colour screen, electronic compass, barometric altimeter, reliable performance and its ability to track multiple satellite networks.
