DJI Mavic Pro Review
GoPro is the go to choice for most of the photography enthusiasts when it comes to action cameras and videography. Their HERO range of action cameras are one of the best in the market and has brought millions of dollars for the company. The first HERO action camera was released way back in 2004 and the fifth iteration of the HERO camera was launched just a few days back. But GoPro has also released Karma, a very capable drone. But there is some tough competition from a Chinese company, DJI.
The DJI Mavic Pro is so tiny that it fits in your hand or pocket perfectly
If you’ve never heard of DJI, then this might be the best time for you to hear more about them. Found in 2006, DJI is best known for manufacturing some of the best unmanned aerial vehicles for aerial photography and videography. GoPro had been developing the Karma in association with DJI but left midway taking complete control of the development. If you’ve not been living under a rock, then you must’ve definitely heard about the Mavic Pro. It is by far the best drone available in the market today and it combines the goodness of many others and puts it all together in a nice little package. It is a pocket dynamite and you’ll know why very soon.
DJI Mavic Pro First Impressions
DJI released their flagship series of quadcopters back in 2013, dubbed as Phantom. The Phantom 3 was an awesome quadcopter but that changed with the release of the Mavic Pro. Some may argue that the Phantom 3 is better than the Mavic Pro, but if you leave minor differences aside, both of these drones take some amazing photos and videos. You’ll never be disappointed with either of them.
High velocity winds don’t cause any stutter when capturing the videos thanks to the three-axis gimbal
Mavic Pro competes directly against the Karma from GoPro. Even though the Mavic Pro wins hands down in almost all the categories, the Karma lets the users use the huge array of accessories from GoPro. So if you’ve been using GoPros for quite some time, the Karma might seem like an enticing option for you.
But talking about the actual drones themselves, GoPro has made a great product but has a long way to go. DJI has been making drones for the past 8 years and GoPro cannot be the best with their first launch. Let us look a bit into the capabilities of the Mavic Pro.
DJI Mavic Pro Design and Capabilities
The best thing about the Mavic Pro is that it is highly portable. It is really small and you won’t have any trouble in carrying it around. The whole drone can fit inside your pocket and it can easily be set up for capturing the best moments. The small size of the Mavic doesn’t mean that it is not sturdy and strong. It is made of high quality materials and is really strong and feels quite heavy. The design is what will sweep you off your feet.
Pictures turn out natural and have a great amount of detail, but lacks just a bit of sharpness
The foldable propellers don’t have to be taken off ever. Unlike the Phantom 4, where you had to clip them on, the Mavic Pro has them fixed on to the drone. The top two arms fold out sideways and the bottom two arms fold downwards. It is an inspiring design and very intuitive. Hats off to DJI!
Specs wise the Mavic Pro comes with a 12 megapixel sensor that is capable of capturing 4K videos. It has a 78.8 degree field of view and an f2.2 aperture. Keeping that aside, the photos and videos shot with the Mavic Pro are astonishingly good.
The photos are never blurred and the videos turn out super steady thanks to the smallest ever three axis mechanical gimbal incorporated right onto the drone. The super small size of the drone shouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable about it as it can withstand high velocity winds with ease.
DJI Mavic Pro Remote
The Phantom 4 had a remote that was as large as the Mavic Pro. It was unnecessarily big and DJI seems to have listened to the critics and fans as the Mavic Pro has a really compact remote. But it still packs in all the features of the Phantom 4 as well.
It can fit all the iPhones from 5 upwards. It comes with a 2,970mAH battery within the remote that can charge your phone, but this is so tiny compared to the 6,000mAh battery on the Phantom 4 remote. The remote is foldable as well and the two arms can be opened to hold it perfectly.
On the top, there’s a five way button on the right hand side and a pause button on the left hand side. At the left hand corner is the return button and on the right hand corner is the power button. Once you turn it over, you can see two more buttons and two dials. The button on the right hand side is for taking photos and the one on the left side is for taking videos.
The dial on the right side is to adjust exposure and on the left side is to aim the camera. There’s a switch for changing between sports mode and normal mode. And at the bottom, there’s C1 and C2, which can be used to set custom functions.
The remote of the DJI Mavic Pro is handy and packs in everything that you can ask for.
DJI Mavic Pro Flight Time, Speed and Battery
With all these amazing features, you might be wondering how fast the Mavic Pro can fly as well as how long can it stay up in the air? If you thought DJI compromised on that aspect you are wrong. The drone is capable of flying at up to 40 miles per hour (64kmh), which is absolutely fast. It can also be used in closed quarters due to its extreme stability and maneuverability. The drone can also stay in flight for 27 long minutes which is just one minute under the Phantom 4. The battery life may vary depending on the use and the 27 minute standard is under optimal conditions.
With a range of up to 7km, the DJI Mavic can be used to explore without inhibitions
DJI Mavic Pro Verdict
The Mavic Pro is the best drone in the market right now. GoPro Karma does a good job but not as good as the Mavic. The 4K video and spectacular shots, the three-axis gimbal, amazing design, compact size, and handy remote will just blow your mind away. The minor negatives of the drone don’t even stand a chance against the large number of positives. There’s no doubt that DJI has created the gold standard in drones. It will take quite an effort from them as well as any other manufacturer to live up to the Mavic Pro.
