DELL XPS 13 2-in-1 I7-7Y75 512GB QHD+ Review
The 3-Minute Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 Review
Beautiful, but lacking power
By Ethan Burke | August 15, 2017
Features & Design: 4.5/5 ● Performance: 3.5/5 ● Value: 3.5/5
The hybrid version of Dell XPS 13 has a sleek design and is even thinner than its predecessor. The keyboard and trackpad are fantastic while the issue of the uncentered webcam has been resolved.
Its performance suffers due to a less powerful processor. There’s also the issue of a small battery that gives you less than ideal battery life.
Is it for you?
If you’re hooked on Netflix, the huge (for the size of the laptop) Infinity Edge screen and tablet mode will give a ton of options to how you watch your favourite shows. The XPS 2-in-1 is light, which is perfect if you’re always on the go, while the thin frame allows it to discreetly fit into most bags. The laptop is ideal for students or professionals who need to go from place to place with their computer on them.
“The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop will easily win a trophy at the hybrid laptop beauty contest.”
Meet the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1
The Dell XPS 13 series has long been a favourite amongst users since its introduction in 2015. So, it is no surprise that the news of a 2-in-1 version was met with anticipation. When it finally landed, it seemed to address many of the issues found in the original XPS 13. Despite looking beautiful, its great aesthetics can’t mask all its flaws.
At first glance, the 2-in-1 looks like an ordinary XPS 13. You would be forgiven for thinking it wasn’t a hybrid. The keyboard deck, trackpad layout, backlit keyboard, and aluminium covering are the same as on the classic XPS 13. However, upon closer scrutiny, you’ll notice that the laptop is thinner, lighter, and the webcam is now in a more natural, centred position.
What we like
The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop will easily win a trophy at the hybrid laptop beauty contest. Its beautiful design is supported by a thin, lightweight body that gives it a nice, compact feel. You can easily put this laptop in your bag without it looking awkward or making you feel like you’re carrying a small person. The keyboard is excellent. It’s is well primed for typing, even for those long documents. The trackpad is on the same level with a fantastic glass-coating. We also liked the drastic reduction in the pre-installed bloatware and the webcam being placed in a more natural, centred position.
What we don’t like
The decision to go with slower processors (which don’t require too much cooling) to save power was a brave one. It probably would have worked if the XPS 2-in-1’s battery wasn’t so damn small. When you consider the competitions’ more powerful processors and longer lasting batteries, it becomes a bit of an issue. To be blunt, the performance isn’t great. Many other hybrid laptops offer far more power, albeit with less portability. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 labours when multitasking, sometimes leading to lag when carrying out simple tasks like writing emails and typing documents.
Should you buy it?
The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is a sleek laptop that looks amazing, has a good screen, and sports a user-friendly keyboard and trackpad. It won’t win any one-on-one performance or battery life battles but if you have outlets handy and don’t need to run heavy programs, it will serve you well. It can be perfect for you if you find yourself hauling a laptop to work every day or yearn for some tablet games to swipe away at. Of course, if you just want a thinner version of the XPS 13, it’s perfect. Just don’t forget the charger.
