Canon Extender EF 1.4x III Review
The Canon Extender EF 1.4x III can be mounted between a Canon EOS Digital SLR and a lens that is compatible, like those of the Canon L Series lenses. It can extend the focal length of the lens by 1.4x and the difference is clear to spot. It is affordable, small and easy to carry in one's photography kit. Moreover, this extender increases the focal length, making it an extremely useful component.
Using the Canon Extender EF 1.4x III helps in getting a narrower angle through the lens. This is what happens when the focal length increases. However, it’s important to be aware that this extender has the potential to cause image quality reduction, as it further enhances the flaws and lens aberrations of the lens it is mounted behind. There are generally seven additional lenses in such cameras and the EF 1.4x III multiplies those flaws and will probably reduce the quality of the end image, although the degradation is very small. The use of this lens extender narrows the camera lens' max aperture setting by 1 stop. This allows half the light possible into the exposure. The ratio of the aperture as it opens to the focal length is reduced by 1 stop. It still opens to the same physical diameter, though.
Whatever lens is chosen for use and a maximum aperture settled on, it will shift one value to the right after the extender is used. The maximum lens aperture for the Canon Extender EF 1.4x III include: f/2.0, f/2.8, f4.0, f/5.6, f/8.0. When using a Canon Extender like this one, DSLR cameras still continue to calculate auto exposures properly. You can also use the Canon Extender EF 1.4x III and lens combination in manual mode. What makes manual focusing difficult is a dark viewfinder, which is produced when narrowing the max aperture. The EF 1.4x III's MFD (Minimum Focus Distance) is not affected by the lens it is mounted behind. This means the MM (Maximum Magnification) of the lens is also multiplied by 1.4x.
The camera's autofocus speed is reduced when shooting with this extender. AF precision has been improved in this product. This is due to the incorporation of the microcomputer in the extender. This is why subject tracking performance is still very high when Series III Extenders are used with IS II lenses. The Canon Extender EF 1.4x III extender can be tricky to work with in low light or when the slow-focusing lens is being used, especially when fast moving objects get too close. Sharpness and contrast are slightly reduced (although by a negligible amount) in such cases as well.
