BlueAnt S4 Review

  • 4.5 / 5
    • The good:
Plenty Of Voice Control Features, Powerful Speaker, Long Battery Life
    • The bad:
Not All Features Will Work With All Phones

The BlueAnt S4 is a voice-controlled, visor-mounted Bluetooth car speakerphone that allows drivers to make completely hands-free calls while driving. After the activation phrase ("BlueAnt, speak to me") has been uttered, users can receive status updates, manage their phone book, check the battery, and make hands-free phone calls by just using their voice. The S4 is about the size of a touch screen smartphone. It measures 4.9 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches. It's made entirely of plastic, though the contrasting textures, tapered edges, and charcoal grey accents look stylish. It felt solidly built and has well-positioned controls for quick on-the-road access. The speaker is located in prime position for superb sound quality. This Bluetooth car kit features two touch-sensitive volume controls at the top, a multi-function button, three lights that serve as the battery indicator, a Bluetooth indicator, a hands-free trigger indicator and a microphone. The on/off switch is located on the side next to the charging port. You attach this compact speakerphone to your car visor using metal clips that employ two powerful magnets. You also get a car charger and a rather short USB cable. This Bluetooth car kit is quite easy to use with smooth, almost effortless pairing and simple telephone operation via voice command. However, the ease of use for this device might be determined somewhat by the type of phone you have. With certain phones, the S4 will automatically pair with your cell phone and synchronize your phonebook smoothly and quickly. However, for phones that do not permit these features to function automatically, you will need to do the pairing and synchronizing manually. This is not a difficult task, but it does require a little more effort than simply tapping your smartphone a couple of times and speaking commands. The S4 transfers and stores up to 2,000 contacts from a paired cell phone. This lets the device read out the names of incoming callers, if they're one of the stored contacts. The first time you pair the S4 with a phone, the S4 will attempt to transfer its address book. At any point after that, you can say Update Contacts to synchronize the two devices. You can handle incoming calls by saying "Answer" or "Ignore." Saying the phrase "What Can I Say" cues up a tutorial. You can connect two phones to the BlueAnt S4 and toggle between them if you happen to be on a call on one when another call arrives. You can answer calls on either phone and use call waiting. However, if you make a call, it will go out on the primary phone, which is phone that you connected to the BlueAnt S4 first. In addition, the primary phone is the only one that plays music employing the A2DP profile. The device can also call the Bing 411 service that gives you these categories: information, sports, movies, navigate, weather, stock quotes, traffic or news. The S4 sounds excellent. voices were loud, full, and clear. Callers had no problem understanding. The S4 charges in about four hours, and it lasts for up to 20 hours of talk time on a single charge. With about a month of standby time, you can leave it powered up in the car; each time you get in the driver's seat, the unit pairs automatically with your phone. Should a firmware update ever become necessary, you can do so online. Overall, the BlueAnt S4 presents a great set of features. It is a superior choice if you need easy voice dialing, text-to-speech and voice answer capabilities for your communication with the rest of the world while you're on the road.
