ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T 32GB Review

  • 4.5 / 5
    • The good:
Great screen, superb design, good price
    • The bad:
Screen lacks brightness, audio not good

The Asus Transformer Pad TF300T is a combination between the best aspects of an Android tablet and a notebook, providing outstanding value making it one of the best Google powered tablet on the market.

It is built well, looks good and is very capable of competing with the best Tablet PC’s 0ut there including the iPad 3 or new iPad.

The TF300T is a more affordable version of the current Eee Pad Transformer Prime. Inside, you'll still find the quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor that made the Prime the fastest Android device. But some of the premium features like the aluminum back and Super IPS+ display are absent. The Asus TF300T is still one of the fastest tablets available. Solid performance, the latest Android OS, and signature keyboard dock like the SONY VGN-N Series Keyboard make the Transformer Pad TF300T a solid iPad alternative.

The most immediate difference you'll notice is that the Pad has a plastic casing, rather than the Prime's metal casing. It comes in three different colors - red, white and blue - and it maintains the same attractive concentric-ring pattern on the rear of the tablet. This is not the subtle visual effect, as on the metallic Prime and ZenBooks, and instead a textured finish - but it still looks good and it improves your grip on it too.

Despite the lesser materials, the Transformer Pad is both thicker and heavier than the Transformer Prime, though not by much — 1.39 pounds to the Prime's 1.29, and 9.9mm (0.39 inches) thick rather than 7.9mm (.31inches). It's still slimmer and lighter than the original Transformer, though, and you won’t notice it feeling any bigger than most other tablets.

Aside from the finish, the Pad's design is essentially identical to its metallic big brother. The tablet is largely nondescript, except for that aforementioned rear texture. There are front and back cameras, but as with most tablets, even the main 8-megapixel one isn't that great, with fuzzy results and muted colors.

As you're holding it in landscape, there's a volume control on the upper right-hand side alongside the micro-HDMI port. On the left are a headphone socket and the lone speaker - which makes the audio sound a little lopsided. On the bottom of the tablet are the recesses for the keyboard to hook into and the proprietary USB and power charging port.

The TF300T has two batteries, one in the tablet and one in the keyboard dock. You can charge either using the supplied cable, and power is transferred automatically from the dock to the tablet when they are connected. The Pad always ensures that the dock's battery is drained first, so if you want to head out with just the tablet it will have the maximum possible charge.

The Asus Transformer Pad TF300T uses a 10.1in LCD display with a 1,280x800 resolution. Like most of the top tablets, it's an IPS technology panel, so you get good viewing angles, better contrast and more vibrant colors than cheaper tablets with TN-based panels.

However, it lacks the Prime's Super IPS+ panel, the drop in maximum brightness is noticeable. While Asus claimed that the Prime's panel was visible in bright sunlight, and it was, the TF300T can make no similar claim.

Another change is the lack of a Gorilla Glass front panel, so it may not be as tough as the Prime too.

This Ice Cream Sandwich-sporting 10-inch tablet is powered by the latest Nvidia Tegra 3 chip.

Tegra 3 is one of the leading mobile processors that power everything your tablet does. It’s a quad-core chip, which means laptop levels of power, and while that may sound like overkill, it’s a necessary part of tablet evolution. 3D games, apps and websites are getting more and more complex, and quad-core systems are tangibly more responsive, and quicker at capturing photos, editing snaps and loading apps.

Navigation through Ice Cream Sandwich was also seamless and smooth, and the TF300T rarely paused for thought.

Overall, as a stand-alone tablet, the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T 32GB is excellent. It's light enough for extended use, and the screen is glorious, full of detail with vivid color. There's plenty of power here too, with media and games running with incredible smoothness. The reasons for buying it are many and varied; it is difficult to come up with reasons why you shouldn't buy one.
