Apple IPhone SE 64GB Review
The iPhone 5s was, for a long time, the bestselling iPhone and it is not a surprise. 5s carried over the revolutionary change from the iPhone 5 and the perfect culmination of glass and metal in the build was simply elegant. It was also the last phone that was designed under Steve Jobs and we can very well see the next generation of iPhone sporting different designs. When Apple announced the iPhone SE, a lot of eyebrows were raised regarding the relevance of the phone in 2015. The market is plagued by large screen smartphones and it was thought that the iPhone SE would have a tough time carving a niche for itself.
iPhone SE is basically the iPhone 6s’s hardware inside the iPhone 5s’s body
But that is not the case and the iPhone SE has been selling really well all around the world. The phone helped Apple reduce its decline in sales, and the demand for the phone is still strong according to Apple. Today, we’ll take a look at the iPhone SE and see why it is the best smartphone for those who want a 4-inch smartphone. Let me tell you right away that this phone is not for everyone. People who are accustomed to using large screen phones would definitely find it a bit awkward.
The box package of the iPhone SE is sturdy and very simple. Just like with most of the other iPhones, you get some documentation, a charging cable, the wall adapter and a pair of earpods. The design of the iPhone SE will hit you hard and will take you back a few years to when the iPhone 5 was around. Now, let’s take a deeper look into the SE and find out whether Apple has made a bold move or a significant blunder.
Design and Build Quality
The design is a perfect copy of the iPhone 5/5s. There is nothing that sets them apart, except maybe the SE branding behind the phone, if you consider that part of the design. The phone is extremely small and easy to hold in the hand, but to be honest, it was really awkward for someone like me coming from a 5.5-inch smartphone. Yes, you can reach all the corners and use the phone easily with one hand, but I’m too accustomed to using my larger phone.
Can you spot the difference between iPhone SE and iPhone 5?
Things definitely got a lot better after a week and I was so much comfortable using it. The phone comes in 4 different colors – space grey, silver, gold and rose gold. The rear has the same combination of glass and metal. The front portion houses the selfie camera, the display, a few sensors and the home button that doubles up as a fingerprint scanner.
You cannot complain about the build quality of an iPhone. You simply can’t. Even though the design is borrowed from a previous model, the build quality is just mesmerizing. The confidence that the phone instills in you when you hold it is just superb. Even the packaging and accessories are so neatly laid out that you’d want other manufacturers to follow suit.
Hardware and Performance
The iPhone 6s is currently the best-selling iPhone in the world. So what happens when you cramp almost all the hardware elements of an iPhone 6s inside the iPhone SE? You get a little beast of a smartphone. The internals of the iPhone SE is almost the same as the 6s, excepting for a few changes. There is the 1.84GHz dual-core Twister CPU along with the PowerVR GT7600 GPU with six-cores under the hood. It also has the same 2 gigs of RAM and comes in 2 storage combinations of 16GB and 64GB.
16GB is a little too less for such a powerful smartphone and users might need to go for the larger storage variant. The display is a tiny 4-inch panel that comes with a resolution of 640x1136 pixels to give a pixel density of 326 ppi. A big disappointment, if you’ve been using Force Touch, is that it is not included in the SE. The display is excellent and the high pixel density renders everything perfectly. The brightness range and sunlight readability are also great. The performance was never an issue with the SE, thanks to the super optimized iOS and simple UI. Apps load extremely fast and switching between them never slowed down.
The rear camera of the iPhone SE will give most of the other flagships a run for their money.
Another slight disappointment is the audio quality. The audio quality of the iPhone 6s was also not pretty great and the case with the iPhone SE is worse. The loudness is almost similar to the iPhone 5s and if you’re in noisy environments, it is highly likely of you to miss calls. Speaker quality is something that you shouldn’t look forward to in the iPhone SE.
The 1,624mAH battery on the iPhone SE will easily last you a day. It is a slight bump from the iPhone 5s but lower than the iPhone 6s. But it lasts much longer than the iPhone 5s and even more than the iPhone 6s. Battery life is not an issue at all, thanks to the lower power consumption of the new chipset.
There is something negative as well as something positive about the camera. The rear camera is a 12MP sensor with an f2.2 aperture. This is the same sensor used in the iPhone 6s and is one of the best smartphone cameras around. It will easily beat some of the flagship smartphones released in 2016. The small size of the phone is not an issue and it even records 4K videos at 30fps. Now the disappointment is with the selfie camera. Even as smartphone makers are bumping up the selfie camera resolution to greater standards, Apple decided to cut it down. The bare minimum for a great selfie nowadays is a 5MP sensor, but the iPhone SE sports a measly 1.2MP sensor. This will be okay for Skype calls and maybe a selfie here and there. But definitely not meant for those looking to take selfies occasionally.
The iPhone SE is not a smartphone for those looking for a refreshed design and a new iPhone. It is just the iPhone 6s inside the iPhone 5/5s, with a few things cut down. The few things are not groundbreaking, but they are pretty substantial. Force Touch is something that I would’ve loved to see, but Apple might’ve discarded it due to the small screen size. The selfie camera is really disappointing as well as the audio quality. If you’re a die-hard fan of the iPhone 5/5s and are looking for a small might phone, then this one is for you.
