Features & Design: 4.25/5 ● Performance: 4.5/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Battery 3.5/5
The iPhone 8 Plus features a solid build and the sleek and highly functional iOS operating system. It’s a premium handset with premium design and performance.
While the iPhone 8 Plus is an excellent phone, it isn’t a huge upgrade over the performance of its predecessor. The design, while premium, is largely iterative, and the battery life leaves much to be desired.
Is it for you?
If you’re looking for a premium iPhone at a more affordable price than the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 Plus is a solid performer and an excellent alternative.
Meet the iPhone 8 Plus
In a rather unprecedented move, Apple launched three different phones with this generation. The iPhone X was the showstopper, with innovated Face ID technology that took the smartphone arena by storm. However, these new features also made it the most expensive smartphone in history, with a price tag of over $1000. The iPhone 8 Plus is a significant upgrade over the iPhone 8 while remaining significantly cheaper than the iPhone X, making it a valuable part of Apple’s lineup going into 2018.
What we like
There’s a lot to like about the iPhone 8 Plus. Apple has always been the king of design, and the 8 Plus has a truly premium feel with a solid metal and glass construction. With a glass back, the iPhone 8 Plus now supports wireless charging - a technology that was previously only present in select Android devices. The phone’s camera is also one of the best on the market, and delivers high-quality photos that rival the best that Android handsets have to offer.
The performance of the iPhone 8 Plus is spectacular, and it should handle pretty much any task effortlessly and beautifully. The iOS operating system just plain “works.” Since Apple has total control over their phones, they’re able to offer an experience that is static across all their devices, leading to a convenient, powerful, and easy-to-learn smartphone experience.
What we don’t like
Unfortunately, there are also some drawbacks to the iPhone 8 Plus. While it is an upgrade over the iPhone 7 Plus in several ways, the speedy performance isn’t a significant improvement over its predecessor. Add to that a design that feels a little dated when compared to the premium iPhone X flagship, and it’s clear that the iPhone 8 Plus is playing second fiddle. If you’re already using an iPhone 7 Plus, there’s not a clear reason to upgrade to the next generation version of your current phone.
Additionally, the battery life of the phone isn’t spectacular. The iPhone 8 Plus will last you through most of the day on a single charge, but it pales in comparison to some huge batteries we’re seeing from various Android handsets.
Should you buy it?
Overall, it’s pretty easy to recommend the iPhone 8 Plus as a solid high-end smartphone. Like the majority of Apple’s devices, you’ll get fast and consistent performance that translates well across Apple’s entire ecosystem of products. While it isn’t quite as innovative as the iPhone X, it’s significantly less expensive and a viable alternative if you’re looking to save some money and still experience the power and convenience of Apple’s iPhone family.
