A dedicated place for your plants is certainly going to give you more satisfaction as a gardener – yes, we are talking about greenhouses. However, buying and setting up a greenhouse is not a small challenge. You need to know how it works and then make the right purchases to be successful.

What to look for in greenhouses?

Location and direction

There are these two points for you to consider immediately – 1. The place where your greenhouse will be located and 2. The direction it is going to face. The alignment should be done towards east or west as much as possible to take advantage of the sun.

Types of greenhouse frames and material available

There are two options available in frames – aluminium and wood. An aluminium frame is lightweight and durable and is easy to install. For gardening throughout the year, a wooden frame makes more sense. The options in glass are standard horticulture glass, polycarbonate safety glass and toughened safety glass. While the first option is the most affordable, the last option is the safest because the glass crumbles when broken. Polycarbonate safety glass is shatterproof but has this problem with algae.

Types of greenhouses available

Mini greenhouses or cold frames are the ones that can be kept directly on a garden bed for seed germination and also for hardening off transplanted trees. They are mostly used during early spring for sprouting of seedlings. You may also find starter or hobby greenhouses for propagating seeds and starter plants that would be later transplanted outdoors. These can be also used as a potting shed. They often have clear or semi-transparent coverings for seed propagation. You can also have larger grower greenhouses for growing crops, propagating seeds or for indoor growing of plants. There are greenhouse kits for you to select from and these contain everything you need to install your greenhouse. All these kits come with user manuals that help you set your greenhouse up.

How to choose your greenhouse according to your need?

Greenhouse to choose for cold climate

If you are in an area where the cold is intense, opt for a cold greenhouse. This type of greenhouse protects against cold but is not frost-free. For the frost-free option, go for a cool greenhouse. A cool greenhouse always keeps the temperature above the freezing point. It maintains a stable temperature of 40 to 45 degrees and ideal as a 'nursery' greenhouse, that can be used for germinating seeds and for raising starter plants and vegetables for summer months.

Greenhouse to choose for hot climate

There is also the hot greenhouse that allows you to control the temperature inside. Hot greenhouse can maintain a temperature of 65 to 70 degrees or more for growing tropical and exotic plants. They are fitted with heaters and grow lights. Then there are warm greenhouses in which the temperature range is 50 to 55 degrees. These are used for growing outdoor flower or vegetables.
