Types of Fragrances

Choosing the perfect fragrance wardrobe can take time. To make things easier for you, we’ll help you figure how to buy perfume. Just keep in mind three questions: When are you going to wear the fragrance (season)? Where are you going to wear the perfume (occasion)? Most importantly (and subjectively), which kind of perfume fits your personality?

Before you can answer these questions, you have to know the six types of fragrances: Fougere (French term for “fern-like”), Floral, Fruity, Chypre (French term for “Cyprus”), Green, and Spicy.

The Fougere is a scent that catches everyone’s attention. It is known for its strong lavender note that’s accentuated with the scent of oak, moss, and coumarin. The most eminent Fougere royalty perfume is the Houbigant, said to be worn before by the famous Marie Antoinette.

The Floral scented perfumes are widely worn today, and is generated primarily from carnations, roses, jasmine, lavender, vanilla, among other blossoms. Marc Jacobs has its own floral scent called Daisy Eau De Parfum. Its daisy-scent which is perfect for the spring season, is a large reason for its popularity.

The Fruity scent is being worn by women who do not love wearing overpowering essences, and is usually made from citrus fruits like mandarin, lime and lemon. Tangerine also makes a perfect fruity scent which gives a fresh and light feeling to the skin and is refreshing for the summer season.

The Chypre exudes a woodsy aroma which is usually made out of the essences of oak, moss, and bergamot. The scent gives a sweet, woody and oriental fragrance and is recommended to be worn in the evening.

The Green scent is usually worn by someone who’s adventurous and who usually spends her time outdoors. It’s a mixture of the pine, leaves, and herbs’ essences.

The Spicy is a scent usually worn during the autumn and winter seasons because of its spice and cinnamon undertones that perfectly suits the cool and breezy weather. It’s a combination of amber and well-chosen spices that gives out a warm feeling to the skin.

Kinds of Perfumes

Now that you know the different types of fragrances, you need to distinguish the kinds of perfume. To distinguish the kind of a certain perfume, you have to look for these words at the bottom of its bottle: Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de cologne.

The Eau de Parfum is the most concentrated fragrance among the three perfumes. The original Eau de Parfum contains 15 percent of the essence. This means that Eau de Parfum will give you the closest possible scent of the essence of your choice. This is the most expensive perfume among the three.

The Eau de Toilette contains 8 to 10 percent of the essence of your choice since it is intended to last for a very short time. The Eau de Toilette is a delightful refreshing scent for the hot weather.

The Eau de Cologne contains 6 percent of the essence. This is usually worn during the summer season. You can easily distinguish Eau de Cologne because in most cases it is applied through spray.

Choosing the Fragrance for the Occasion

You have to wear a certain perfume for a certain occasion because good perfume attracts people, while a bad one will make them avoid you. But how do you know if a scent fits the occasion?

In the office, wearing a light perfume is recommended. You don’t want to smell like you are about to go to a party after work with your musty, evening perfume. A professional woman keeps everything under control and so focus on which perfume has the lightest scent exuding professionalism. Thus the Fruity, Floral, and Fougere fragrances are the perfect scents to be worn in the office.

For evening events like dinner dates, a woman will smell terrific with the Spicy and Chypre fragrances since it exudes a sophisticated aroma that many men definitely fall for.

During weddings and other celebratory functions, a woman can bring out her confidence and romantic flare by wearing a floral scent. A floral scent exudes a refreshing and sweet aroma that will make people draw near to you, without attracting too much attention.

Just remember that you always have to check the weather so that the perfume you will be wearing will give you a refreshing feeling instead of the opposite.

For cold weathers, always wear heavier fragrances like the Spicy, Fougere and Chypre scents. For warm weathers, always wear the Floral, Green, or Fruity perfumes.
