    • The good:
high value for money,2TB storage, USB 3.0/2.0-compatible, low operational noise and temperature, useful file management features
    • The bad:
doesnÕt support multiple connection, prone to fingerprints, smudge, and dust, cannot backup files individually
A good combination of storage size, efficiency and features makes the 2TB Western Digital My Book Essential USB 3.0/2.0 a real bestseller. Compared to its closest competitor, the Seagate GoFlex Desk, the My Book Essential series looks minimalistic. While it stands upright on rubber feet, has a Kensington locking mechanism and enough heft to give it stability, some users still prefer it laying horizontally, which doesnÕt appear to affect its performance. The enclosure is also well sealed on all sides and doesnÕt creak or bend at the slightest pressure. Yet there are a few things that may warrant some improvement in its outer features. The most noticeable of which is its fingerprint-/dust-/smudge-magnet, glossy black enclosure. It also has only one USB dock where there couldÕve been two or three, or at least an additional Firewire port for those planning to Òdaisy chainÓ it with other external drives. It comes with the intuitive WD SmartWare interface which complements its storage size rather well. It allows users to configure the drive to automatically shut down once the computer does or after a specified time of idle use. ThereÕs also a data encryption feature that protects classified data with a password and backup system that automatically duplicates files of a certain type. Buyers should remember, however, that the latter doesnÕt come close to the reliability of a RAID drive. While backwards compatible with USB 2.0, itÕs almost imperative for users to take advantage of its USB 3.0 interface as it doubles, even triples, the speed of the former. In fact, its performance doesnÕt fall too far behind against competitors with Firewire or eSATA interface when it comes to random or sequential file transfers. To top it off, the device doesnÕt generate too much noise or heat even when subjected to heavy work loads. The Western Digital My Book Essential also comes in 1TB, 1.5TB and 3TB flavors, all of which are ideal platforms for storing and managing massive amounts of digital content. Plus, with its superior USB 3.0 performance, it guarantees to keep users up to speed for a long time.
