Wacom Intuos4 Medium 9x6 PTK-640 Review

  • 4.5 / 5
    • The good:
Highly responsive, premium high-performance, definitely an artist’s tool!
    • The bad:
Expensive, not for hobbyists or non-professionals.
Very sleek and stylish, Wacom’s Intuos4 Medium 9x6 PTK-640 is designed to be identical to working with the traditional ink pen. Packed with features to make images easier to manipulate, it’s ideal for use with Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop. It’s a lean, mean machine for serious digital artists and photographers with its incredible responsiveness at being able to recognize up to 2048 levels of pressure. Premium graphics tablets like these are a little on the expensive side due to its more specialized characteristics. However, it is a great investment for those who can appreciate its ability to recognize extremely light pressure for delicate brush strokes, fully customizable (and illuminated!) ExpressKeys and a finger-sensitive Touch Ring for more control. The controls and keys are on one side of the tablet, in a symmetrical layout, allowing a 180° rotation and equal functionality for left and right-handed artists. The medium size of the Intuos4 tablet already provides a lot of working room for professionals at 48.5 square inches or A5 size. The widescreen-shaped area makes it perfect for use in widescreen and dual-monitor modes and HDTV video editing. It’s far from bulky though, with a slim, ergonomic design that features gently sloping palm rests. In a showcase of Wacom’s innovative pen technology, the Intuos4’s ergonomic Grip Pen has interchangeable pen nibs that include standard, flex, stroke, and hard felt that come housed in a weighted pen stand. The new Tip Sensor allows adjustment of sensitivity levels to as low as 1 gram compared to the older Intous 3’s 10 grams. This simulation allows the artist to experience a feel of working with traditional mediums. Comfortable to use, sturdy and just the right weight, the cordless, battery-free pen is a delight to use. It glides smoothly on the new Intuos4 surface for consistent strokes. Other features of this versatile tool includes a 5-button mouse, an eraser, tool ID, radial menus, precision mode and tilt sensitivity. It supports Microsoft XP (SP2) and Microsoft Vista as well as Mac OS X 10.4.8 or higher. It is highly compatible with most image editing programs from Adobe and Corel, however every now and then some software compatibility issues and an input/output lag arises. Some other cons are issues with the nibs wearing down too fast with use, the body’s gloss picking up fingermarks and the rubber on the pen getting dusty easily. However, those are really non-issues in comparison to what it can give you. Nibs are technically consumable products like paper and ink, and the speed at which they wear out greatly depends on the user’s technique in handling the tool. As for maintaining the stylish sleekness, wiping the tablet clean after use and keeping the pen in its holder will do it. The Intuos4 Medium 9x6 PTK-640 is an expensive, high performance tool whose expansive features would be under-utilized for dabblers or occasional, average hobbyists. However, for the serious artists and the professionals who know how to maximize this product, it promises to optimize workflow, efficiency and productivity with its wide range of abilites.
