The Tom Tom Via 180 is a GPS device that comes with plenty of mid-range features and a reasonably easy to use interface. It features a 5-inch resistive screen. Among its features include IQ Routes, fast route calculation and re-calculation. It comes with a feature that warns divers about red light and speed cameras. It comes with Bluetooth and has a USB connection port. The interface of this GPS device can display maps in 2D or 3D mode. It measures 134mm (W) x 93mm (H) x 19mm (D) and weighs 213g.
The Tom Tom Via 180 looks attractive. There's a brushed strip on the screen bezel that looks and feels fabulous; the rest of the body is made from hard plastic. Because of its tapered shape, the device seems to be slimmer than its stated 19mm thickness.
The Tom Tom Via 180 uses a 5 in. resistive touchscreen instead of the more responsive capacitive form. It is not always responsive, but if you hit it hard enough it will bow down to your commands. This does have one major benefit, no distracting reflections during the day.
Destination entry via the QWERTY keyboard is easy enough, and it is augmented by voice recognition. Although it can understand whole street and suburb names, the hit rate is less than 50 per cent and frustration will soon make your fingers do the walking.
The Bluetooth hands-free system pairs quickly and easily with Android and Apple phones. The sound quality is decent, but given the need to raise our voice, it is not really suited for long windy conversations.
The latest Whereis maps are included and upgradeable for free during the first 90 days of use. The maps include lane guidance for most roads, as well as full-screen lane junction graphics for motorway exits and junctions. Text-to-speech works well, but gets tripped up by a noticeable number of street names.
All in all, the Tom Tom Via 180 is a GPS unit that will serve you well, whether you need to travel to a specific location, or a point of interest in a place you aren't familiar with.
