    • The good:
High speed; Useful features; Great image and sound quality; Excellent battery backup; Best cost-benefit in its category
    • The bad:
Camera does not have an impressive zoom feature; High-end devices in the market trump it (albeit at a disproportionate cost)

The Xperia series from Sony has created a lot of waves in the smartphone market, and one of its successful releases is the Xperia SP. It is a mid-range Android phone with several exciting features that proves to be a cheaper – yet efficient – alternative to the Xperia Z.

It has a rectangular slab design with a translucent bar right at the bottom that glows in different colors to indicate notification and / or calls. The phone is compact but a little bulky at 5.47 ounces owing to its aluminum frame. Xperia SP boasts of a sufficing 4.6 inch display with a dedicated camera button and power button along with volume rocker on the right side and a microUSB port on the left. The back has a removable plastic cover that encloses the non-removable battery and the micro SIM card slot. The phone has a good battery life of approximately 10 hours talk time and as high as 700 hours on standby with its 2370 mAh Li ion battery. The 4.6" display has a resolution of 720x1280 pixels and is powered by Sony's Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 adding color management, noise reduction and contrast enhancement in real time to improve videos and images.

The processor allows easy multitasking and is perfect for Android Jelly Bean 4.1, allowing seamless navigation and great battery life. The phone has 8 GB internal storage with can be expanded up to 32 GB with external microSD card. Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean adorns the phone with improved navigation through the interface, between apps, playing games and browsing the web. Sony has also done a satisfactory job with its Unified UI, improving interaction with Sony's Media apps like Walkman and PlayStation Mobile. Apart from conventional connectivity options like Bluetooth, Wi Fi and USB, Xperia SP also supports 4G (LTE) and NFC by means of which sharing between SP and other NFC compatible devices is possible by a simple tap.

One of the highlights of Sony's phones is the camera, and same goes with Xperia SP. An 8 MP camera features the Exmor RS technology which enables it to click crisp pictures in low light as well. Image stabilization, geo-tagging, touch focus and many modes like Normal, Burst, Sweep Panorama and scene selection are available. 1080p video recording at 30 fps can be done and a front VGA camera is also present. However, the Superior Auto mode of the camera app shows a time lag because of detection of photo mode. With its high-end Adreno 320 GPU, good battery backup and audio quality, Xperia SP is a top performer as a mid-range Android smartphone. It is perfect for those who are looking for novelty but not thinking of spending an exorbitant amount.
