Seagate Laptop SSHD 750GB 7200RPM 32MB SATA 6Gb/s STBD750100 Review

  • 4.0 / 5
    • The good:
Build Quality, Great Performance, Hybrid Drive
    • The bad:
Susceptible to shocks and vibrations, Slow adaptive memory

The Seagate Momentus XT is a solid state, hybrid, high-capacity hard drive storage for laptops, external backup and small form factor desktop PCs.

It also has and SSD-like performance and is designed for all standard laptops and is independent of any kind of OS, driver and software, making it easy to integrate and use. The Momentus XT still has the 2.5" form factor, but now has an updated SATA 6Gb/s interface. It has a 7,200RPM spin speed, 32MB drive cache, four heads and two disks. It also has an 8GB SLC SSD cache, which, if in any case malfunctions, still allows the device to operate as a normal hard drive. Additionally, all the data stored remain intact, which speaks highly of the Momentus XT's reliability and durability.

It has an embedded algorithm called adaptive memory technology that automatically and independently moves used information from the operating system to the flash memory for faster access. It has twice the amount of flash memory (8GB) for more storage space, making the drive work more like an SSD. The drive's platter-based storage works like that of any other hard drives and spins at the same speed as laptop hard drives. The downside here is that the drive is more susceptible to shocks and vibrations and generates more heat than normal SSDs.

The Momentus XT's adaptive memory takes time to show improvement in performance, as it only catches up on the third boot. The start-up process is reversed, too, especially if one application is not used for a long time. When used as a secondary drive, the drive registers about 80MBps as it copies large amount of data. This speed is slower than some other high-speed hard drives. But when used as the main driver, the Momentus XT's copy speed is reduced to 34MBps, which is understandable, as it is writing and reading data at the same time. Overall, the Seagate Momentus XT 2.5" 750GB greatly helps in improving a computer's general performance. Although it is not as fast as most SSDs, it still provides the speed and overall experience similar to one.
