   The Samsung S27A950 is a 3D-enabled LED monitor released in early 2011. As the top unit in the series, combines a sophisticated, modern design with an ultra thin frame. This product offers a full high-definition, 1080p display and includes DisplayPort and HDMI ports so you can plug in your computer, Blu-ray player, cable box, or game console. Power-saving features like the Eco Light Sensor and Eco Motion Sensor help you save money on your electric bill. The monitor includes a kit with 3D glasses and 3D gaming software. Design-wise, the Samsung S27A950 looks more like a HDTV than the usual generic black rectangular monitors most of us use. Finished in brushed metal, has a base that's connected to the monitor at the bottom right-corner, in a sort of swoop design from the edge of the monitor down to the base. The similarity to a HDTV isn't just skin-deep. Inside is a whole plethora of features that bring it close to a regular HDTV, along with the monitor's headline feature - used together with LCD shutter glasses, the S27A950 is a 3D-capable monitor. The display itself is actually very thin - in fact, it's one of the thinnest monitors around.Part of the reason for this is that the S27A950's base is where all its ports are housed, including a DVI-D connector, a HDMI port, a DisplayPort and a headphone output port. The base itself is very large and hefty and there's very little wobble for the screen even if you shake the table. The one flaw in this design is that while the display can be tilted backwards and forwards, there is no height adjustment. The monitor’s 3D requires active shutter glasses, but they aren’t the ones provided by Nvidia's 3D Vision system. Samsung’s glasses are far lighter and use a small watch battery instead of a fixed rechargeable battery. Samsung bundles a copy of the TriDef 3D software with the monitor, and you'll need to set it up differently depending on which make of graphics card you use. The monitor’s installation software places a special shortcut on your desktop after you install the software that lets you choose which type of 3D to use. As far as technology goes, the S27A950 is LED-backlit, and is a TN (twisted nematic) panel which means that while it has good side-to-side viewing angles, the monitor tends to go dark when viewed from lower or higher angles. Nevertheless, Samsung has tried to minimize vertical viewing problems somewhat by offering what it calls the Magic Angle, which has a number of presets available to change the brightness of the monitor so that it looks better from extremely low or high angles. Overall, the performance was really well - color saturation and accuracy were quite good, at least when you're looking at the monitor straight on. The monitor also comes with a conversion feature to convert 2D content to 3D. This feature works surprisingly well although it occasionally gets the depth of certain objects wrong. The S27A950 has quite a number of features to help make viewing more comfortable - apart from the Magic Angle feature, there's also Magic Bright, which utilizes a light sensor on the front of the monitor to adjust the brightness depending on ambient lighting conditions. Overall, the Samsung S27A950 is a great monitor. It has fantastic image quality, versatile 3D and an ultra-attractive design. What it does, it does very well. It is quite expensive, though.
