If you’re someone who likes to have all their gadgets built into one master device, then the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab would be a thrill for you to behold! Slim and compact, it’s got the functionality of a tablet with full quad-band GSM voice communication accessibility, tri-band 3G, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA support and capabilities for SMS and MMS. The complete connectivity set also comes enhanced with Wi-Fi support, GPS with A-GPS capabilities and a digital compass. The small but powerful P1000 Galaxy Tab runs on Android’s latest OS v2.2 Froyo with TouchWiz 3.0 UI customization. Supported by a 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird CPU and PowerVR SGX540 graphics accelerator, it displays a brilliant 7" 16M-color TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen boasting of a WSVGA (600 x 1024) pixel resolution in durable Gorilla Glass. It showcases the proper wide aspect ratio regardless of your preferred viewing orientation. However, it begs improvement when it comes to viewing angles and some picture ghosting is seen due to the LCD screen. Some applications may also be incompatible with the resolution and the gallery only displays downsized images. Nevertheless, the touchscreen function is incredibly responsive and the controls and menus are easy to navigate with four capacitive buttons that are designed large enough to be comfortable to operate. With an internal storage of 16GB and 512MB of RAM, other features accommodated on this nifty device are a 3.2 MP AF camera backed up by an LED flash, an accelerometer, ambient-light and gyro sensor; video-call camera, HD video recording with DivX and XviD video codec support and full HD video playback and HD video output. A higher camera resolution would have been nice although size makes it awkward as a camera. A standard 3.5 mm audio jack and stereo Bluetooth v3.0 gives good sound output, but the loudspeaker function could be better! Aesthetically, the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab is sleek and smooth in a durable, 12mm plastic body. It’s very comfortable to hold with curves in the right places and a manageable 380-gram weight. The 4000 mAh battery unit claims to have seven hours of video play back, however, it cannot be detached in case it needs changing and a trip to an authorized reseller would have to be made for it to be replaced. A microSD slot is provided for, but no USB host support that should more or less be a staple nowadays. A disappointment is that you’d need separately purchased accessories to fully harness the P1000 Galaxy Tab’s true tablet potentials and maximize applications like the Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Office document editor and other applications. And as a phone unit, you really can’t hold it to your ear as the loudspeaker would then be too loud. Best to use a headphone or go hands-free with a wire or Bluetooth. It’s not probably going to replace laptops anytime soon, but as a combination phone and tablet on the go, the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab still puts up quite a convincing fight.
